Circe

The Charm

The fire bites, the fire bites. Bites
to the little death. Bites

till she comes to nothing. Bites
on her own sweet tongue. She goes on. Biting.

The Anticipation

They tell me a woman waits, motionless
till she’s wooed. I wait

spiderlike, effortless as they weave
even my web for me, tying the cord in knots

with their courting hands. Such power
over them. And the spell

their own. Who could release them? Who
would untie the cord

with a cloven hoof?

The Bite

What I wear in the morning pleases
me: green shirt, skirt of wine. I am wrapped

in myself as the smell of night
wraps round my sleep when I sleep

outside. By the time
I get to the corner

bar, corner store, corner construction
site, I become divine. I turn

men into swine. Leave
them behind me whistling, grunting, wild.

Circe was a sorceress (or a goddess) who featured in the Odyssey (among other places in Greek mythology). She turned Odysseus's men into pigs.

The narrator of this poem is a woman, who imagines herself as Circe: turning men into pigs (figuratively). In other words, they fall in love with her and make pigs of themselves "whistling and grunting" after her.

The Charm:

Perhaps this is describing some sort of incense thrown on a fire, as part of the charm. That's not how Circe did it in the Oddysey, but perhaps that is how the narrator is imagining it. In any case, from the title of the section it seems that this is how the narrator imagines herself casting the charm over the men. (This is the most ambiguous part of the poem. You may interpret it in other ways.)

The Anticipation:

They say women wait motionless until they are wooed. Usually this just means that the woman waits for the man to make the first move, but in her case, she imagines her waiting to be like a spider's: not the prey but the hunter. But she is even more spider-like than a spider: she does not even have to weave a web for her flies to come to her--they weave it themselves. All the spell cast on the men who court her is of their own making: they decide she is an object of desire and that they must have her. By courting her and giving expression to this desire, they solidify it, "tying the knots themselves". And who can release them from their own spell?
The cloven hoof is a reference to pigs again.

The Bite:

The title of this section may be a reference to spiders, once their prey is caught. In any case, this is the part where she asserts her mastery and turns men into pigs by walking outside.
"Wine" is a color. "I become divine" seems to be following the version that Circe was a goddess (not a sorceress).

One note: It seems that this poem is about empowerment. When the woman walks out, she gets whistles and cat-calls from the men in the street, which can feel objectifying and degrading. She deals with this by imagining herself as Circe. She is "wrapped in herself"--she wears pretty clothes to please herself, not the men who see her. As for the whistles and grunts, they do not express what she is to the men, but what she has done to them. She has turned them into pigs.
