Bellies are every fashion-conscious man's nightmare. Nothing could possibly be worse than having a big bulge that protrudes from the front of your shirt or wearing pants that refuse to close over a waist that is two inches too big. If you were to consult the Internet for a solution to your problem, you'd be likely to come across the same answer every where: exercise to get your clothes to fit right.
Don't get the wrong idea; exercise is the best and healthiest way to solve your overweight issues but if you just want to address the issue of looking good irrespective of size, that's a different discussion altogether. In fact, for the latter issue, you can solve it with no more muscle exertion than what's needed to open your closet.
Your Wardrobe Weigh-In
You definitely wouldn't be the first guy to try and hide the bulge with clothes that are a couple of sizes too big. Although wearing an extra large tee over a medium body might conceal the cellulite per se, it does nothing to flatter your figure. Quite the contrary, it makes you look even worse by making your whole body look completely out of proportion.
On the other side of the spectrum, there are also those guys who get clothes that are too small, saying that doing so will psyche them into slimming down. The idea has potential but it rarely translates into actual loss. And while you are still in the process of slimming down, you will be stuck with all those clothes that emphasize your beer belly. Hardly flattering, don't you think?
Scientists have recently found out that too-tight belts and collars - just some of the measures that men often resort to - could even have adverse effects on your posture and blood flow. Wearing clothes that are too tight (and even some of those that are too loose) isn't just ineffective. You might just be harming your health - and your appearance.
Keep It Simple
Stocking up on simple clothing such as solid-colored shirts, ringer tees and plain henleys is a smart decision. Those pieces aren't called 'basics' for nothing. Pieces like those are the foundations of every fashionable guy's wardrobe and they might just be the saving grace for your own.
Why restrict yourself to basics? First of all, they are your safest clothing choice. Printed or patterned clothes usually end up making you tacky, fat or even worse; both. Plain pieces on the other hand, give the illusion that your body is a flat surface because the uniform color affects the viewer's depth perception. It is this illusion that creates the desired effect of making you look far slimmer than you may actually be.
Simplicity also means wearing just what is necessary. Refrain from wearing sweaters or jackets if they are not absolutely necessary for completing your outfit or keeping you warm in the cold. Additional pieces on your body translate into additional bulk visually and that's precisely what you want to avoid. If you simply must wear additional layers such as coats or jackets, get them in solid colors and traditional cuts. Navy blue and black are great choices for anyone who wants to appear a couple of sizes slimmer.
Play with Patterns
Illusions play a big part in making you look slimmer and thinner than you are. Patterns can help create that illusion by fooling the viewer's eye into looking at your body in a certain way.
Take for example, a vertically striped shirt. It's a staple in any guy's closet and for good reason. The vertical stripes force the viewer's eye to perceive your body lengthwise, giving the impression that you are taller and thinner. You can try with a simple pattern in classic colors like navy and white pinstripes. Once you've gotten comfortable with those, you can start trying out different combinations.
Looking thinner need not be an expensive or time -consuming effort. All you'd need to do is pick the right clothes to flatter your bod and then wear your outfit with the confidence that befits any great-looking guy.
