Men Solid Neck
It used to be that tattoos could only be found in correctional institutions, worn by prison inmates. With modern society's perception changing from negative to somewhat acceptable , tattooing has found its way to the military.
A recent survey shows that about thirty (30) percent of all people living in the United States from the ages of 25 to 34 have a tattoo. The number is slightly lower for those below 25 years old which is about twenty eight percent (28). Those older than 35 are likely to have twice or thrice more tattoos than those aged below them. With these recent changes in tattoo perception and acceptance, it is more apparent that there are people who should have been able to qualify for active military service but are disqualified from the draft because of tattoos.
The army has now revised its regulation 670-1 which specifies that tattoos are now permitted on two areas only: back of the hands and back of the neck. Furthermore, the tattoo should not be "extremist, indecent, sexist or racist" as quoted from regulation 670-1. A tattoo anywhere else, especially on the head is not allowed except for what is commonly acceptable as permanent make-up. Permanent make-up includes permanent eyeliner and lip-liner to accentuate fullness of the lips. Even then, the permanent make-up should be as conservative as possible and should complement the complexion and uniform of the wearer. In no other case should it be trendy.
New recruits will be evaluated based on the current army guidelines on tattoos while those who are planning to get themselves inked should consult their immediate superior first. This is especially true if the soldier has questions about the tattoo. In cases where the tattoo is found to have violated the guidelines made by the army, the soldier will be advised on medical options, but he will not be ordered to have his tattoo removed. However if the soldier insists on retaining his tattoo and opts to ignore the medical options given to him, the soldier may be discharged from active military service.
The United States Coast Guard on the other hand limits the size of the tattoo to twenty five percent of the space between wrist and elbow, knee and ankle. Unlike the army, no tattoo is allowed on the hands and neck.
