Luxury watch brands have over the years had many successful nautical design references, for example the Corum Admiral's Cup range and the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph, so the connections between watch design and that of the maritime world have often inspired the creation of imaginative timepieces.
The Hublot Swiss watch brand was founded in 1980 by Carlo Crocco. Design inspiration for his watches came from the porthole of a boat and the name Hublot is French for porthole. The Hublot Classic line featured twelve screws right through the bezel resulting in not only a watertight wristwatch, but also dispensed with the need for hour markers on the dial. This resulted in a distinctive pure understated design in its finished form. The strap was crafted from natural rubber, the design of which using steel fibres woven into the material made for a tactile yet extremely durable and comfortable feature.
Hublot were not considered to be a watch brand who played it safe in the design department, never more so in 2005 with the release of their most striking and innovative piece yet. With a new CEO at the helm in the form of Jean-Claude Biver, the Hublot brand launched themselves to the forefront of visionary design when they unveiled the astonishing Hublot Big Bang wristwatch. Still using the porthole design synonymous with the Hublot brand, the Big Bang featured six screws through the bezel. The use of rubber was still in evidence but it was now combined with an incredible array of other cutting-edge materials including ceramic, titanium. carbon fibre, aluminium and tungsten. These combined with red gold, white gold and stainless steel in a glorious fusion of the traditional and the futuristic. No surprise then that this awesome wristwatch became a prize-winner collecting such awards as the prestigious "2005 Design Prize" in the Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix.
The Hublot Big Bang became a stunning example in the genre of the high-end luxury sports watch and further models received endorsements from within the world of sport. One highly desirable piece, the Hublot Big Bang Ayrton Senna Limited Edition Flyback Rattrapante Chronograph is a fine example of such a watch. Limited to 500 pieces this spectacular watch is created in a black ceramic case, with steel detail and a signed transparent exhibition case back on a signed black rubber strap. This is truly a stunning men's wristwatch created as a tribute to Ayrton Senna the three times World F1 Champion.
The Hublot Big Bang Ayrton Senna Chronograph is a dramatic design, the almost completely black dial features skeletal steel hands and the boldly contrasting Ayrton Senna signature in red. It has 30 minute chrono counter at the 3 o'clock position, power reserve between the 6 and 7 and decentralised small seconds at the 9. References to Ayrton Senna's Brazilian nationality of which he was fiercely proud are shown in the subtle but vibrant use of the Brazilian colours with green/yellow on the case side and on the inside of the strap. This makes for a powerful combination along with the black rubber and ceramic construction.
In his lifetime Ayrton Senna was an extremely generous individual, donating large parts of his fortune over the years to help the poor people of Brazil especially children and young people. On his tragic death in 1994, this charitable work continued with the founding of the "Instituto Ayrton Senna" which continues to transform the lives of millions. In keeping with this spirit of generosity, Hublot have collaborated with the institution to create this wristwatch with part of the sale of these models contributing to these worthy causes.
Ayrton Senna was considered by many to be the greatest F1 driver ever and as a tribute piece the Hublot Big Bang Ayrton Senna Chronograph does not disappoint. The combination of quality of workmanship together with the use of cutting-edge materials make for an impressive wristwatch. Add to this the passion and depth of feeling that the name Ayrton Senna still evokes and you have a very special timepiece indeed.
