Have the constellations changed over the past 5000 years?
I know the big bang theory and how scientists say the universe is constantly expanding... also how because of the speed of light a star we see today may have already been snuffed out for over 100 years etc.
But that's about all I know of stars, sad huh?
I'm tying to write a sci-fi /time travel short story in which by some screw up a person trying to travel back to 2000 A.D. gets stuck in 2000 B.C. but can't get back unless he finds out exactly when and where he is unaided by any fancy future tech. Could star patterns be the key? I'm welcome to any suggestions, but I have my heart set on my protagonist looking up at the sky and having a eureka moment, so astronomy is pivotal to the plot.

Star patterns and constellations would not have changed that much in 5,000 years. The stars are whipping around our galactic center at a fantastic velocity, but because the distances are so great, most star movements relative to each other in our sky are insignificant over a 5000 year time span.
Your time traveler, if he had an understanding of astronomy or was a navigator on a ship, would have enough understanding to determine his latitude from the stars, even if he was on a side of the equator (seeing stars that were unfamiliar to him) that he had never been before, simply by observing the altitude of the celestial pole (north or south). He'd have to observe circumpolar stars to determine which point was the celestial pole.
Longitude would be almost impossible, unless he had a clock that was in synch with UT and measured the difference between that clock's "noon" and the time the sun crossed his meridian (local apparent noon)... but there was no UT back in 2000 B.C. So his longitude might not be possible to determine from the sky.
