The Dilemma
Dining with the Queen? An important date? Prom, Wedding, going to the Oscars? All of these events require that a man look his absolute best and that he find a formal style that really communicates what he wants people to know about him. Diplomats, businessmen, members of governmental organizations and media have to be in the public eye and are required to follow basic rules of formal dress and etiquette. The average man may find himself lost in the sea of details and rules regarding hem length and shades of grey when it comes to men's formal wear.
What is the proper dress of each occasion? How do I know when to wear a tuxedo or just a nice suit? When is a white jacket appropriate? When can I get away with it? Is there ever a good time for white shoes? What about black patent? Aren't those for girls?
Afraid to wade your way through the myriad of details concerning men's formal wear; the right Dinner Jacket, what fabric it should be made from, what model will suit your body type, personality and the event. Are you concerned about exactly what colour everything should be? How wide should the lapels be this year and what is the right position for pockets, are they supposed to be sewn shut? Then there are vents or no vents, what is a vent anyway and of course the trimmings, what am I, a turkey?
The Black Tie EventThe Black-tie event requires a manservant, not in your league? Not to worry, you can find just about everything on the Internet. You can research the right thing to wear at the right time. Find a manservant if you can afford one or hire a specialist in formal wear etiquette. One such specialist once taught me to drink from my wine glass by placing my tongue on the edge of the glass so that my lips do not touch the glass. I cannot tell you how many times this simple rule of etiquette has turned heads.
A black-tie event requires that invitations be sent out, which will provide the dress code requirements. If you choose not to wear the prescribed formal dress you may hinder your social status or career. Generally speaking, men wear formal evening dress that includes a black tuxedo suit with a vest or cummerbund, a white tuxedo shirt, a black bow tie (hand tied only) or a man's brooch. The white shirt should have cuff links and the shoes patent leather or fine high quality leather, clean, well cared for and shinning. If you do not own men's formal wear borrow or rent and make sure that it fits. A tailor can do creative things with an ill-fitting suit.
The White Tie Event
The official government or royal function may require men's formal wear that includes white tie dress. This would mean that a man chooses a long tailcoat in white or black, with matching trousers and ensemble. A crisp white shirt with or with out a detachable collar the pointed wings tips of which go under your stiff cotton hand tied white tie. The shirt does not have buttons but is done up with white, silver or diamond studs. These studs should match the cuff links. The white cotton vest may have the collar of your choice; think about your body type when choosing and the vest should cover the waist of your trousers. The jacket covers the waistcoat and the tails should not go below your knees. Black silk knee socks, with garters if necessary and small opera slippers in fine leather or if the event is at your home slippers made of velvet with an embroidered crest.
If you choose to wear a hat, a top hat is required. If you do wear a hat an opera cloak or coat should accompany it. The fit, cut and fabric of your men's formal wear choices tells the informed observer who you are and how much you care about the event that you are attending. If you are in a position to be invited to such an event then take the time to get to know the etiquette around such events and the required dress.
High Fashion
Men's formal wear in high fashion can be seen at the Oscars or on the fashion show runways. With the advent of live recording and specialty TV channels we have more access to these event then ever before in history. If you are seeking to make a personal statement with your evening wear that will turn heads and you are not worried about it being in fashion next year, then find a designer that inspires you and have her design something special just for you. If you are really brave, put a notice up at a local design school and have a student make something for you.
Has gone through many changes over the years but in the recent past we are still playing with shades of grey, white and black. Very few other colours are introduced, except maybe in a flower at the lapel and if you wear a flower leave out the handkerchief. Leave them nothing to talk about except the occasion at hand by being impeccably dressed.
