10 Neck Tie
A job interview is a chance, an opportunity, a privilege. If you happen to be invited for one, it means you're given a shot to land on a job. For a formal job interview in the corporate world, dressing right is rule Number One. It's so invaluable and indispensable that you should never ever mess up with this. Impressive your credentials may be, you should give the same (or even more) attention to what you'll be wearing.
Whether you are aware or not, your attire has an impact on your interview, and at some point, may even influence the outcome of your interview. It is probably the second thing, next to your smiling face and beautiful eyes, which will greet your interviewer. In fact, it says a lot about you even before you say your first word. Along with an excellent resume, your attire creates an impression. So it's a must to invest time and effort to work on your best one. Remember, you are most likely to be interviewed once, so give it your best shot.
The Basic
First things first, what is the proper attire for an interview?
Fortunately, it is not very complicated especially for men. In fact, it looks quite simple. Men's attire, whether for a job interview, business meeting, or presentation, is usually comprised of a suit, a shirt, a tie, a belt, a pair of pants, socks and shoes. Basically that's it.
The Common
This attire is often regarded as the industry "standard". But did you ever notice there really are times when men all look the same when wearing suits?
Funny, but, true. It's like you almost cannot single out somebody who wears the same suit as with 10 other guys.
Now, just as much as you want to comply with "the" dressing standard, you don't want to sink in the crowd especially during an interview. Don't just aim to "belong". You have to go out there and stand out.
The "Standout" Necktie
Yes. That's the only way around. Because you cannot do anything more with your suit's color and your necktie is the only thing you have other options with.
Let me put it this way.
Usually, the suit is either black, dark grey, dark brown, or navy blue, same color for the pants, paired with black shoes and socks. They not only make you look professional, they're also neutral colors, which are always best matched with white shirt/long sleeves under. The white color underneath creates perfect contrast, not only with your suit but also for your necktie.
And yes, that's also the reason why some men keep a collection of favorite neckties. Some even pair it with the "mood of the day". While it could be lots of fun, for a job interview though, you don't want to play mix and match.
But don't just wear any necktie. The standard professional necktie is 3.75 inches wide and there are some other rules to keep in mind:
Rule #1: Tie Designs
Never wear symbol ties, novelty ties, or cartoon ties (i.e. Neckties with drawings or logos. Cute, yes, but does not suggest that you're professional). Patterned ties such as those with diagonally-stripped styles can be used but always match it with the suit.
Rule #2: Tie Color
Be careful when choosing your tie's color. Your necktie should compliment the suit and coordinate with the main color/theme. Avoid flashy colors that are too loud or over striking. Use your better judgment on this or ask somebody else's opinion. You don't want your interviewer to get distracted (or worse, be annoyed) by your necktie's color. Silver, black, and white are also a big no-no. Also, some colors are fashionable in certain seasons like spring and summer. Popular formal neckties include solid and burgundy colors.
Rule #3: Tie Materials
The best necktie is always silk, because it drapes well and hangs nicely. It looks very good on the suit too. Never wear stiff cardboard ties, they look funny.
Additional reminders though. Consider your height when picking out a tie -taller means longer necktie, add extra 2-3 inches from the standard tie length. And to keep the tie secure, tuck it in your belt buckle. Also, a four-in-hand tie-knot is still the best.
If you do it right, your necktie can definitely make you standout among the others. It should look dashing and neat. And because suits look so generally common, your necktie has the best chance of standing out, and so does you. It certainly creates a great impression that people will remember, and also help you build rapport with your interviewer. Make your goal for the interview not just a "dress to impress", but a certified "dress for success".
