Yellow Bow
Birthdays. Christmas. Baby Showers. Anniversaries. Every year we have opportunities to bless others with gifts. This means there are many occasions for which we need wrapping paper, boxes, bags, cards, ribbons & bows. Most of us are on a budget, and even when buying wrapping supplies at discount stores the cost can add up to a tidy sum by the end of the year. Learning how to re-purpose ordinary items into recycled wrappings can feed your creative side while keeping your money where it belongs - in your pocket.
I like getting creative when wrapping presents, but I didn't make my own bows - until now. I had been content with buying bows, ribbon & paper from thrift shops, yard sales, etc., and making them look pretty on a package. Sometimes I had trouble finding a bow to match the creative wrapping, which kind of kills the weird excitement I get when being creative.
I was chasing some green rabbit trails one day on the Internet and found a clever tutorial on bow making. These were not ordinary bows. They were recycled, a.k.a. re-purposed, from magazine pages! Since I have loads of magazines around the house (hand-me-downs & thrift shop finds, mostly) I was anxious to give it a try. The only problem was that I was preparing to travel with my husband and would be away from home and my paper cutter for a week. I called upon my creativity and packed a few fall issue magazines, scissors, a pencil and ruler along with my usual travel items. Knowing I would be in the hotel room several hours while he was in class, I figured I could take a little break from my writing and get crafty.
Now all I needed was a small hole punch and some fasteners (found for half-price at Hobby Lobby). Armed with my supplies, I sat at the desk in our room & started looking for interesting colors and patterns in my magazines. After making my choices and removing them from the books, I measured and cut the pages into strips. One more look at the tutorial and I started twisting the strips, punching little holes in them, and putting them together on the metal brads. Honestly, the first few were not very pretty. I found that one design that worked better, and the bow resembled a mum of sorts.
The next morning, there were three copies of an insert in our complimentary paper - a shiny, bright yellow-orange two-sided advertisement. When our housekeeping lady, Gail, came around, I asked her to bring me any inserts she could and showed her one of my pretty creations. When I returned from the workout room, there were several more on our bed! I made a few from this paper and gave one each to Gail and her assistant the following morning. The next afternoon, another staff member knocked on my door with a partial roll of shiny silver & black wrapping paper. She asked if I would like to use it to make more bows. YES!
I am going to keep making my recycled magazine bows. We choose not to buy many gifts, but on those rare occasions, it will be nice to have an assortment. To see the tutorial, visit the web site. Whether the occasion is one of those listed above or "just because" we will always be ready with our recycled wrappings.
