Woven Mens Neck
I grew up in a heavily wooded area, so we didn't have a lot of direct sunlight all of the time. When I moved to SoCal, I discovered a lot of things that I never noticed where I grew up. Cloud shadows are one, but a more surprising one was the number of people walking around with umbrellas open. Yes, that would be expected if it was raining, but that wasn't and isn't the case. They're using the umbrellas to shield themselves from the sun.
This begs the question, does it work? I guess that depends on what you're expecting it to do. There are a number of things we do or assume about sun safety, and not all of it is accurate. Here is how to protect you and your family.
1) Clothing: Yes, clothing can protect you, but there are some caveats to that. One is, of course, that it has to cover the skin. A pair of shorts may be comfortable, but they leave the rest of your legs exposed. Long pants and a long sleeved collared shirt made of tightly woven material is ideal. Cotton or microfiber material works the best. Loosely woven material is not going to protect you as much, though it could offer some.
2) Hats: A baseball hat is better than nothing, but a straw woven, broad brimmed hat is better. This will protect not only your face but also your shoulders, upper back and neck. The weave allows some breathing room so you don't get quite as sweaty.
3) Photosensitivity: Some herbs and medications can make you sensitive to UV rays. In a sense, you become allergic to the sun. An ugly, red rash will appear wherever the UV rays hit your body. If you take anything that does that, avoid long periods in the sun and wear appropriate clothing/sunblock.
4) Sunblock: SPF30 or above is the recommended block. Lower levels don't protect as well. It needs to be put on at least twenty minutes before exposure to the sun and reapplied according to package instructions. If it is not water safe, be aware it is probably not sweat safe. You may have to apply it more frequently.
5) Sunglasses: Your eyes need special protection, and you really can't start too young to do so. Exposure to sunlight can encourage the formation of cataracts, a clouding of your eye's lens. Proper sunglasses, suited to your age and face shape are the best way to protect them.
6) Umbrellas: It doesn't matter whether it was designed for personal use (as in for rain) or a beach version, it can only offer a small amount of protection. UV rays can still hit exposed skin, especially from the open sides of the umbrella. It's a good idea to use one, but don't forget to shield the rest of your body.
7) Vitamin D: Unless you eat or drink foods enriched with D, you may be deficient. It is made by the body with sunlight, but it does take direct exposure. Sunblock prevents absorption, so you may need to find a supplement. Ask your doctor to help you choose the best method for your medical conditions.
Water: Being in, on or near water can be a problem. The reflection intensifies the light and the UV exposure. If you are at the pool or the beach, keep close tabs on everyone's sunblock needs as it is far easier to get burned in these locations.
If you don't protect your skin from UV rays, more than a sunburn can occur. Premature aging...lots of wrinkles at a young age...is probable. Also, too much exposure can cause skin cancer. To protect yourself, speak to your doctor about tests that will show how much damage has already been done. There are tests that can show you how much and where it is. Then you and the doctor can decide how best to protect you from further harm. Be sure to mention any medical conditions and especially medications or supplements you use. That will let you know if any of them increase the risk of sun damage.
