The fashion savvy will know that trends come and go. Predicting what we will be wearing in ten to a hundred years times is a difficult feat with immediate hot trends being thrown to one side during such a turbulent economic climate. Culture, lifestyle, politics, music and beliefs are undeniable factors that need to be taken into consideration when trying to predict the future of fashion.
Metallics are in and are here to stay, but futuristic space fashion experts in the 1960's were thinking a long some more extreme lines. What is undeniable is that technology will increasingly begin to dominate catwalk design. Cyber technology has already influenced the fashion world to such an extent that global trends now emerge faster than ever before because of internet and text messaging.
There are predictions that wearable technology will become as common as a pair of jeans. Fashion designers now collaborate with iPod and cell phone companies to put together design concepts that bring together footwear, accessories and cosmetics with other powerful fashion items.
Designers have been experimenting with innovative materials for years but it's possible that the big fashion powerhouses will retain certain elements of the traditional and vintage whilst also incorporating the more futuristic. Along the James Bond gadget theme, cufflinks and ties have already been turned into recording equipment, GPS systems and remote control devices.
The American snowboard maker Burton sells the Clone Mini Disc Jacket, which is a coat with a built-in Sony mini disc player and a remote control sewn into the sleeve. And to help fashion-forward customers keep even cooler during the summer, Japanese company Kuuchoufuku makes jackets with built-in fans. Suzanne Lee, a senior professor at St. Martin's School of Fashion in London has spoken of the creation of a spray on dress that is created from non-woven cloth which can then be styled.
Students are generally the group that tends to adopt the most radical trends and this is why Nike and Adidas are considered to be at the forefront of predicting what the future of fashion will be. Adidas has already created a running shoe with an embedded microchip that monitors the terrain underfoot and accordingly adjusts the level of shock absorption provided by the shoe's heel.
It can be suggested that the future of fashion will fundamentally follow the same principals. Garments will continue to be creatively designed to cover our bodies and protect them from the elements. But it can be argued, in an increasingly environmentally conscious world, what these garments are created from and what they incorporate will be just as important as their appearance.
