White Jacquard Necktie
I've had very different experiences outfitting wedding parties with vintage skinny ties which make me believe even more in both their unique qualities and usefulness at such important events. One wedding was on the east coast, the other on the west coast, and both were summer weddings. Both grooms were set on the ties as being part of the gifts they would be giving the groomsmen, so they wanted something special and out of the ordinary. Well these skinny ties were anything but ordinary!
As Unique As Unique Gets
Sure, narrow ties from the rat pack days were made by the millions, but 50 years later very few remain in good functional condition. You've got the usual suspects such as the paisley and polka dot, solid and striped, but sometimes the color combinations are pretty unusual. Take mixing brown, tan and dark lavender stripes! And the fabrics are often wonderfully woven jacquards and brocades, which even on a solid color add texture and dimension.
The excitement comes in the way of all the unique designs and patterns which are no longer produced today. Some are pretty wild looking, even on slimmer ties. Anyone who receives such a tie as a gift is sure to appreciate their uniqueness. And while marriages happen every day, every wedding party wants theirs to be extra special and like no other. One-of-a-kind accessories such as vintage ties are but one small way to contribute to making that possible.
Achieving Uniformity with a Flourish
It was common for solid color skinny ties to contain a single embellishment (aka flourish) which is located midway up the tie and serves as the focal point. It also breaks up an otherwise totally solid tie. One of the grooms I worked with wanted all black ties, each with a different flourish in order to get a uniform look but still be as unique as his groomsmen. In fact he had his friends each pick out the ties themselves. It was a marvelous idea on his part, and in the end it worked out very well.
Combining Disparate Designs with a Monochromatic Scheme
The other groom wanted narrow neckties all in blacks, grays and whites, and combining various patterns was not only alright, it was preferred by him. It was fun for him to look at all the thin ties in stock, and he made sure he picked out one for himself as well. This strategy is as legitimate as the first because while none of the ties were identical, color-wise they coordinated with one another and added class to the black tie affair.
