White Bowtie

Does it bother you when a Martial Arts masters is overweight?
Or the goofy white guy with a bushy mustache?
Ok the second question is just a side joke, but the original question is very common. How many times do you see masters who make their belt look like a bowtie from their gut hanging over, and can't preform the techniques they try to teach you?
I see it alot, do you think masters should maintain a certain physical fitness level? You wouldn't want a personal trainer that was fat. Or a yoga instructor that wasn't flexible. ETC
LOL! I think you are talking about supposed masters.
As Katana said, most actual masters aren't able to train the way they used and are physically just too old, but understand the techniques.
Personally I have had overweight Personal Trainers that were amazing.
Also every coach I have had eventually gets to the point that they are no longer to perform the techniques the way they used to. But mostly because I have been in arts that are very hard on the body.
Honestly I could give a damn what someone looks like who is instructing me, as long as they know what they are doing and have the resume to prove it.
My Judo coach was what some people would consider overweight, because he had a potbelly. But he was far from out of shape or anything.
Keep in mind there are body differences, if you looked at the average "World's Strongest Man" competetor you would see lots of guys with "guts".
Look at Fedor Emelienko, upon looking at him you would think he was soft or overweight.
So I don't place much emphasis on looks. When I was younger it was important to me that someone was either highly successful competetor, or was able to beat me. Now, I find that sometimes the best fighters make horrible coaches, and sometimes the best coaches make horrible fighters.
So I try to be more open minded now.
But again there is also a difference between a guy who is overweight but very powerful (usually that came with a lifetime of training, but injuries have made them overweight with age) and a guy who is fat, and weak. Because they have never done real physical training, and just got fat.
But like I said, I have had great personal trainers who were overweight.
I have had experiences with good coaches that were overweight.
The key is to do they really know what they are talking about, do they add something to you or are they just blowing hot air.
When you are young and can eat whatever the hell you want, and you get a six pack after 10 situps it is easy to sit on the side and judge. Sometimes people are just blessed with good body types. Some people aren't.
When you get in your thirties and time catches up to you, you get a different perspective on things, when it takes extreme dieting and exercise just to lose 5 or 6 lbs.
I guess to me it is bigger than if they are just fat. You can be fat, and really know your stuff. You can be fat, and very powerful and strong. You can be old and unable to physically perform the techniques, but can tweak someone's technique and make them better.
But yeah, if you are a "grandmaster" and under 65, I have my doubts to start. If you are a 5th degree or higher and under 45ish, I have my doubts.
If you fat, and weak, I wonder.
If you can't perform a technique, or perform it very sloppily, and are not riddled with surgery scars, I have my doubts.
First off, most people who are physically unable to perform the technique are smart enough to have someone else perform it for them, not try to do it themselves.
Well I guess to me it is more than just about weight or stuff. There has to be something more behind it for me to be bothered.
When you are around long enough, you get a way of telling when someone is full of crap or not. Instructors full of crap, are usually a much bigger warning size then having a big belly. Frankly anyone who calls themselves a master I have my doubts about. The real masters I know, you call them master because it is obvious, not because they tell you they are, or to call them that.
Personally I could careless what someone looks like, but more of how much of a benefit can they be for me. If they can recognize a mistake I am making, or make a technique better than what it was, I am all for it. I have had enough Judo instructors that had a hard time walking, and damn sure should not have been out on that mat, but were able to make adjustments to what I was doing where I saw immediate results.
So I guess it all depends, the overweight thing doesn't bother me, more what they say or do. Or what they produce. I have seen enough guys that sucked in tournaments or competetion produce amazing and great fighters or competetors to know that it is more about the result than anything else.
If you are 22 years old, overweight, call yourself a master, and talk about competeting in underground fighting matches, while your other blackbelts have sloppy technique, well then that bothers me. lol
Guess it is all relative to me.
