Tommy Hilfiger was born in March of 1951 to an Irish Catholic family in Elmira New York. He had 8 brothers and sisters. Out of the 9 children he was the second oldest. Even as a young boy Thomas Jacob Hilfiger has a passion for fashion.
At 18 years of age he began his career in a retail store called the People's Place. This store was located in his home town on Elmira New York. This retail chain had 10 locations at one point, but eventually ended up bankrupt.
Early Days in the Fashion Industry
After the People's Place went out of business he moved to New York City where he launched his own label. His brand peaked the media's interest fairly quickly and the Tommy Hilfiger Label took off. Several rappers and hip hop groups really liked his designs. They began the trend of wearing his clothes way too big.
Hilfiger was quick to take not of this and he began to design his clothing with a larger more daring look. Tommy set the trend for hip-hop during this time. He sent his designs to his favorite rappers.
Fragrance Collection
Hilfiger has launched many different fragrances. He has designed at least 10 different fragrances for men. Some of those fragrances include Tommy Hilfiger cologne, Freedom Cologne, Hilfiger cologne, and Tommy 10 Cologne.
He also designed many fragrances for women. These include Dreaming Perfume, Freedom Perfume, Tommy Girl Perfume and True Star Perfume. His most recent fragrance launch was done with Tommy Dunn, who is a model for the Tommy Hilfiger collection. The launch was paired with the celebration of Macy's 150th year in business.
Necktie Designs
Hilfiger also designs men's ties. His neckwear designs vary from sporty to sophisticated. There is no doubt that he is truly talented when it comes to fashion design and that talent really shows through in his neckties.
The Tommy collection sports many two toned ties. They really make a bold statement and are perfect for a day in the office or a night out on the town.
Denim Collection
Denim designs are what Hilfiger is most well known for. Over the years he has kept up with Denim trends. He is still one of the top designer denim labels at Macy's. Many of his denim designs were inspired by his love for music. He played a major role in the sponsorship of the Rolling Stones "No Security" Tour in 1999.
Hilfiger designs denim for the entire family. He has lines of denim for babies and children as well as adults. His designs make it easy to keep the family looking great in denim!
The Latest Trends
This falls line of clothing is classic and chic. The tones a neutral, but can easily be paired with brightly colored items to liven things up! The fall fashion show was a big success and we should expect to see great things coming out in the Tommy line this fall.
