Unique Black Necktie
So you've submitted all the paperwork, gone through all the ropes, waited for all those days and then have finally been called back for that final interview. While this stage might already seem like the home stretch, this is also where a good number of otherwise qualified applicants mess up. The interview is a critical meeting that's all about first impressions and the kind of image you present. It's all or nothing.
The key to a good interview is giving the interviewer the right impressions- the idea that you'd be worth hiring as a new employee in the company. To make the long story short, you have to look nothing short of perfect. Being or at least appearing to be perfect is no walk in the park; you have to create an overall image where every aspect of yourself will look like something the HR department wants to hire.
Get In with the Right Getup
Clothes make the man, says one adage. In the world of job interviews, it can make or break your chances for employment. Keep in mind that your outfit is one of the first things that the interviewer will notice once you step into the office. There are also certain characteristics in your clothing that could give the interviewer an idea about your personality. If there's a time when you should dress for success, this is it.
Dressing conservatively is the order of the day for a job interview. A suit is imperative; a two-piece, two-button affair in navy or gray should do the trick. Stick to classic pieces like a clean white shirt, a simple tie and plain black wingtips or square-toe leather shoes. Don't bring out your avant-garde haute couture outfit unless you're applying in the fashion industry a la The Devil Wears Prada.
Aim for an overall look that is clean and respectable-looking. Flashy or unusual pieces can get you remembered by the interviewers in all the wrong ways. If you're having a dilemma with the dress code, remember: overdressed gets hired over under-dressed. It's better to leave the interviewer with the impression that you're over-eager for the job, instead of the idea that you barely took the time to dress properly for it.
Confidence is Key
Believe it or not, some employers are actually willing to hire a less qualified applicant simply because he or she was more confident and relaxed during the interview. Calmness and confidence suggest that you're competent, that you know what you're doing and that you're comfortable in this environment. That's exactly what HR wants.
Get yourself a crash course on all the social niceties of a meeting. When you walk into the office, walk straight to the interviewer (or to the most superior-looking interviewer), proffer your hand and then introduce yourself. Actively restrain any fidgeting or mannerisms, and maintain eye contact as much as possible. Be (or at least look) attentive and don't let your eyes visibly wander too much.
Most importantly, don't forget to smile. No, you don't need to look like you're trying to match Julia Roberts' megawatt tooth-flashing. But smiling will make you look like an amiable person, someone that the rest of the office will have no trouble getting along with.
Nailing that job interview is part competence and part acting; your qualifications have to be up to scratch, and the image you present to the interviewer should be a positive one. Grab yourself a mirror or recruit a friend and then practice all those social niceties you read about. Getting the job isn't necessarily about having the best qualifications; sometimes having the best interview might just be your ticket to a new job.
