At first glance, this doesn't seem possible. Any odd-numbered grouping of odd numbers will add up to an odd number. Essentially that's the question - add up 9 odd numbers to total 80.
Example - You could have 8 poles with 1 horse each, leaving 72 horses for the last pole. So one of them would have to have an even number of horses tied to it.
Using larger numbers, like 9 horses per pole for the first 8 poles - 9 x 8 = 72, leaving 8 horses for the last pole. So that doesn't work either.
There must be a trick - the question doesn't say that each horse can only be tied to ONE pole. Maybe one of the horses is tied to 2 different poles?
So the first 8 poles have 9 horses each, making 72 horses tied to poles. The last pole has 8 individual horses tied to it, plus one of the first 72 horses is also tied to it (with a longer rope), totalling 9 horses tied to the last pole?
