Tie Narrow
The half Windsor knot is a medium sized necktie knot. It has a somewhat asymmetric shape and it is a perfect match for dress shirts with a medium to narrow collar spread. It is also a great looking necktie knot in combination with British striped neckties, and formal solid color silk ties.
Before we get started on tying the half Windsor tie knot, make sure that your hands are clean and that your fingernails are filed. Rough fingernails and rough skin at the inside of your hands are poison for your neckties. The silk yarns are so fine, that you can easily pull a thread if your hands are not manicured correctly. Dirt is another way to ruin your expensive silk ties. It is much easier to clean your hands than it is to clean a silk tie!
One of the best ways to learn how to tie a necktie is by watching an instructional video or by looking at a detailed step-by-step picture guide. If you are more the type that learns by reading instructions and through trial and error, then the instructions below might be helpful for you.
Instructions on the half Windsor necktie knot:
- As with every tie knot start my flipping up your shirt collars, and buttoning the top button of your dress shirt.
- Then, take the necktie and place it around your neck. Weather you leave the wide end of the tie on your left sire, or the right side is personal preference. Typically, if you are right handed, you let the broad end of the tie hang down from the right. Make sure that the wide side of the tie hangs down much lower. We need this extra long to actually tie the necktie knot.
- Take the wide side of the tie and cross it over the narrow end. Hold the intersection in place with two fingers. Doing this will create a loop around your neck in form of a "V" shape.
- Then take the wide end of the tie and loop it through the "V" from behind. While doing this keep the un-finished tie knot in place by holding it between two fingers in your other hand.
- Then take the wide end of the tie and wrap it behind the un-finished knot. Then go back over the knot, but this time don't tighten it. Instead create a loop in front of the un-finished knot. This loop is needed in step #7 where we tighten the knot.
- Then pull the broad end of the tie through the "V" again from behind. This is done at the same side that you did the first wrapping in step #4.
- Pull the Wide side of the tie through the loop created in step #5.
- Carefully tighten the tie knot and adjust it so that it sits center between the collars.
- Flip down your shirts collars and you are done tying the half Windsor tie knot.

As a general tip, practice your tie knots in front of a mirror. You will get a good feel for how long your should let the broad end of the tie hang down this way. In general the finished tie knot should be made so that the wide side of the tie ends near the center of your belt buckle. Tying a necktie too long or too short will look funny and it is better to redo the knot a few times than walking around with a tie that just makes you look "goofy".
