Which would make a better democracy ?
The mythical country of Whatistan has a tradition of 2 political parties.
One party that makes up 50% of the voters is filled with voters who like neckties - some like black, some like white, but the politicians have to have long neckties to win their vote.
The other party is filled with a variety of voters - 20% like bowties, 20% like no ties, 20% like ascots, 20% like lace cravats, 20% like scarves. The bowtie, ascot, and cravat types don't like the no tie types. The ascot types don't like the bowtie types, etc. etc. The only thing they all agree on is they don't like long neckties.
Would it be a better democracy to have 6 parties instead of 2 so the majority rules ?
Wow, some people actually missed the allegory here, as blatantly obvious as it was. Overall, I think having multiple parties would be a step in the right direction. And once that has been established, the long necktie wearers would start to separate as well ("I like blue ties!" "I like short ties!"), so I don't think the necktie party would remain 50% of the vote for long. I always thought that only two parties in a democratically-based political system was wrong.
BTW - A Republic is simply a different form of Democracy, they are not mutually exclusive.
