1. Know your designers. A size 3XL is not the same for each designer. Save yourself alot of time by knowing which designer fits you best.
2. Try on clothes before buying. This is a must. It allows you to get a feel for the clothing before you make a purchase. Make sure to sit down, bend over, walk around, and raise your arms; see and feel the clothing in action. Take a friend and you will have an extra opinion.
3. Find your fit. If clothes are too tight; bulges, rolls, and dimples will show through. If clothes are too big, they add bulk and can make you look heavier. Instead, wear the right size for your build, and don't be afraid to let some parts of your clothing be form fitting but not tight. You should be able to sense your body under the clothing.
4. Choose darker colors. Not only for their slimming ability, but versatility as well. Navy blue blazers, dark denim jeans, and dark colored sweaters are staples of a good wardrobe and can take pounds off of your frame. You can always add bits of color to let your personality show through.
5. Avoid horizontal stripes. Vertical stripes lengthen the frame taking away from girth.
6. Big belts and belt buckles. They bring attention to the midsection. Save it for roleplay cowboy.
7. Say "no" to shiny fabrics. They bring attention to everything, especially in the sun.
8. Buy Quality. Men's fashion does not drastically change from year to year. Invest in classic garments such as dark colored suits, jeans, blazers, white dress shirts, overcoats, etc. These pieces can give you years of life and form the foundation of your wardrobe.
9. Flat fronts vs. pleats? Totally depends on your body proportions. I prefer flat fronts, but if you have a large, hanging stomach or big thighs, flat fronts can be uncomfortable. Try a single or double pleat pant instead.
10. Have wider hips? Try wide leg or boot cut style pants. Pants that taper at the bottom make your hips look wider. Pants that have width at the bottom even out your frame more.
11. Minimize color contrast. A dark shirt worn with khaki pants cuts you in half at the waist (making you look shorter and wider). The same shirt with gray slacks de-emphasizes your waistline and boosts your altitude.
12. Have a large stomach? Buy tops that are straight cut at the bottom so the fabric lays flat, in an undefined manner. Tops with elastic at the bottom outline the stomach area and have a tendency to rise up in the back when bending over.
13. Round face? Point your collars. For dress shirts, stay away from spread collars and look for pointed collars, which help minimize the roundness in your face.
14. Hide big problems with small patterns. Knits with small, textured patterns and dress shirts with fine, subtle designs draw the eye in, focusing it away from larger body parts.
15. Empty your pockets. Don't carry around excess baggage. Emptying your pockets of unnecessary items like bulky cell phones, overstuffed wallets and electronic devices. This will help slim your hips and smooth out your pants.
16. Stand up straight. Good posture lengthens the frame.
17. Keep appearance simple. Don't overdo it. Simple is always better. You can always accessorize to add personality.
18. Confidence. Confidence makes a good ensemble look great. Wear it always.
