Solid Tuxedo
The best way to begin is by saying that nice things often happen in strange places.
So let's say you're attending a wedding in another city and you're staying at a motel that pretty much flat out lied about each amenity they promised. The room is impossibly small - with an unfettered view of the ice machines, which, round about midnight sound a lot like a platoon of Hell's Angel retiming their Harleys. The air conditioner, on the other hand is whisper-quiet, but all it seems to do is sweep the moisture-laden air from one side of your room to the other. To top it off, you must dealing with those wooden hangers you can't steal because the wood part isn't attached to the metal top, which also helps make them a major pain in the neck to hang anything on. Like, for instance, a tuxedo, which you now discover at the dusty bottom of the closet.
The wedding's tonight. There's about an hour to go before your good friend makes the largest mistake of his already wasted young life. Your rental car has no GPS, you have no map, there's nobody you know you can follow - without getting you arrested for stalking - and the ceremony is, for some odd reason, 49 miles from the motel. All of which makes now is the perfect moment to discover that the tux your rented neglected to include those pearl studs that hold closed that idiotic ruffled white shirt.
We will instead concern ourselves with the one saving grace of your out-of-town adventure. While the television in your room is tiny and the colors are garish, it does get HBO. To relax and to make sure you're horribly late, you flip it on. You are rewarded with the last thing you needed if you honestly wanted to see the marital knot being tied.
A great movie you never heard of. A great movie that hooks you instantly. A movie so good, so gripping, you forget trying to thread those paperclips into the tiny buttonholes as you sit half-dressed on the bed. The movie is called "Switchback".
Five minutes go by and you have already forgotten to call the desk to find out if they've ever heard of the town where the ceremony is being held. You instead start figuring out what led the plot to its current point; maybe a third of the way through the movie. Dennis Quaid is an FBI agent who is acting very strangely, Danny Glover is a cowboy who is acting very very strangely and Jared Leto plays a medical student who is a pinnacle of normalcy, which is perhaps the strangest thing of all.
Two more minutes in and you quickly find yourself fumbling for the ugly remains of last night's room service. Those icy fries are somehow tastier and more edible than when they were first delivered. You start picking at the food while keeping your eyes glued to that fuzzy screen. You lean back because you know for a fact you aren't going anywhere until this movie is over.
It is at this point that we will now attempt to answer why Switchback can turn a usually responsible wedding attendant to an AWOL irresponsible creep who is leaving the attractive red-haired bridesmaid in a hideously green dress without an escort on that long, lonely path to the altar?
First, Switchback is one of those rare movies made by people who know how to tell a great story; in particular, writer/director Jeb Stuart and producer Gale Ann Hurd. Stuart is one of the brilliant writers behind "The Fugitive" and "Diehard". Hurd is the Stamford-educated intelligent producer of "The Terminator" films, which is perhaps the best example of "enough said" we've ever heard.
Better still, Switchback features a great, twisty plot tightly wound chokingly tight and made real and meaningful with a ton of solid performances by Dennis Quaid, Danny Glover, Jared Leto and Lee Ermey.
What's more, viewers just keep getting surprise after surprise by this story of a serial killer being tracked by an FBI agent with a personal interest in finding him. It matters not if you learn the killer's identity almost right away. What matters is that the movie never stops to let you breathe for a second.
When it ends, you sit there, kind of stunned you had never heard of this great movie. Then, after resolving to go buy the DVD, you slowly realize the reception is in yet another town - this one over 60 miles away. Of course, there is nary a map in sight and your original idea of tagging after the gaggle of people following the ceremony is now defunct been the ceremony has been history for about a half hour by now.
Despite all this, you're oddly happy. You have discovered Switchback and you know that once you own this gem, you're going to have a great movie you can turn to over and over again. So you think to yourself, heck, who can get upset about missing the last time two people were ever going to utter the words "I do", at least, to one another? After all, you just lucked out with a truly stupendous discovery like Switchback!
