Solid Narrow Necktie
The necktie allows a man much more creativity in his wardrobe than his suit. It allows individuality and style, it can be bold, loud, conservative or formal. Many colours and patterns can be combined with the dress shirt and suit to achieve these looks making a man sharply dressed and ready for whatever the day has in store for him.
The Knot: Choosing a necktie doesn't have to be difficult. It is a bad idea to wear novelty ties or clip on ties. Both of these are just unsightly; tie your own necktie. 100% silk will give you the best look and the best knot. Button up the top button of the shirt and flip up the collar when you begin. Make sure there are no hangnails or rough areas on your hands so as not to snag the fabric of the tie, which can ruin it. There are many styles of knots to learn, though the ones you probably have already heard of are the four-in-hand, the half Windsor and the full Windsor knot. Which is the best knot is up for debate, though this author prefers the full Windsor, as it doesn't look asymmetrical or crooked as the others can. It may; however, produce a larger knot so might not be best with a narrow collared shirt. Any knot you wish to tie, simply make sure it is a tight knot. This does not mean that the loop around your neck should be tight, choking you. You should be able to fit a finger between your neck and collar so that you can breathe and move comfortably. The bottom of the tie should reach to the middle of your belt when knotted.
The Colours and Patterns: There are endless variations in this department depending on which look you wish to convey. A good way is to find the dominant colour of the suit and match the tie to it. If you want to make your tie pop, contrast the colours. Make sure you harmonize and don't clash. If you find this difficult, use a colour wheel. As for patterns, solid coloured ties work well with patterned shirts and vice versa. If both are patterned, make sure the sizes of the patterns are different. With a striped shirt and tie, wear a tie which has stripes twice as large as the shirt. There is nothing wrong with a bold coloured tie, but if an event is formal, it might be prudent to go with a more conventional colour such as formal black. It is better to overdress with your suits and ties than to under dress if you are unsure. If you are sure what you are doing, however, a black tie may seem boring to you.
Upkeep: Once a stain is on a tie, often there is almost nothing to be done and it is unable to be worn again. The best way to keep your neckties clean is to never get them dirty, but this is much easier said than done. You can take a tie to the dry-cleaners, but it shouldn't be the first thing you try to clean it. Dry-cleaners often use very harsh and damaging chemicals and cleaning methods which will easily ruin a thing as delicate as a necktie. Never throw the tie into the wash or iron it. The inside of the tie is easily warped and will not keep its shape or be knotted properly if exposed to anything but a small amount of water. Cleaning before a stain sets is the best thing so keep some clothing wipes in your pocket. Contrary to the name, don't wipe a mess on the tie, always blot so the offending spill will not just be spread around. Untying your necktie after each wearing and hanging it up will help keep away wrinkles and creases.
Ties can be worn both for casual and formal occasions and they make a man look crisp and sharply dressed. Don't overlook the necktie as an important and creative accessory even if it is not a part of your daily attire.
