Skinny Tie Solid
Wearing a tie always produces an air of confidence and authority, but a tie you wear to the office may not be appropriate for a pub, club, or a nice restaurant. It can come across as too formal and stuffy, even if worn with a decidedly more casual outfit. A skinny tie can form the perfect balance between casual and formal when you need to add a little flair and panache to your look; it can be worn over a plain button-down shirt for a more confident look or in a layered outfit for a distinctive, refined fit.
Tall men will find that a skinny tie has a slimming look, making them appear even taller (this may not be good if you are particularly skinny). Shorter men will have to be careful and are often better served wearing skinny ties in the context of a layered outfit, as it can make them look stockier or even overweight. Skinny ties have seen a renewed popularity, and while not exactly common, they can be found in an increasing variety of stores.
More traditional men's stores won't carry many skinny ties, but more fashion-forward retailers such as Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and even Macy's have good selections both in-store and online. This is indicative of the garment's widespread popularity, as it was previously considered an alternative fashion. Ties that come in a variety of widths can be considered "skinny;" they come in super thin (less than half the width of a traditional tie) to only an inch or so thinner than a standard tie. Generally the super thin ties are perceived as flashy, and in my experience they have been more difficult to wear effectively.
Wearing a skinny tie makes a bold statement, but the standard rules of fashion still apply here. Generally a tie should contrast the shirt it sits above; a plaid or patterned tie should be worn with a solid shirt and vice versa. One of the easiest, most effective combinations is to wear a checkered shirt with a solid skinny tie. The tie should match one of the colors in the shirt as a rule of thumb (I like black and white with a black tie, but then again it's not me you're trying to impress). It works great in the summer with rolled up sleeves, so be prepared for some extra looks and smiles when you're out.
Try a few on with your favorite shirt and you'll see that you don't have to be in some post-punk hardcore band to wear a skinny tie. Many men shy away from the skinny tie for fear or looking too "weird," but if you try it out, you'll see the only side effect is looking great. I prefer to find my ties at Barney's or Nordstrom, where they have a huge selection and a conflagration of stylish brands. You can find a great looking tie for around $20, but the unparalleled versatility it will add to your wardrobe is, for lack of a better word, priceless.
