Silk Cufflinks
The cufflinks industry has been steady on its growth for the past three decades. With these escalation and popularity, we now see an increasing demand to return to traditional handmade quality cufflinks designed with precious metals and stones. This is buttressed by a huge range of cufflinks massively produced to suit every taste and budget.
There is nothing new with cufflinks. They are not fresh innovations either. Cufflinks as an accessory can be traced back to the 17th century when it was used to link shirt cuffs and as a substitute to ribbons and laces. The dawn of cufflinks to fashion concurred with a break from silk and lace and ended in Bea Brummell's simple dark suit creation.
Cufflinks were first produced for the elite social groups. The industrial revolution introduced the concept of mass production which eventually led to the production of cufflinks that are not exclusive to the aristocrats. At this point, cufflinks were mass produced at affordable prices for all classes of people.
A lot of designs were produced during the industrial revolution. Chain links were first created and then followed by T bar and the swivel end. A more ornamental wrap around became popular eventually. British Designer Ian Flaherty was the one who introduced a flat chain link studded with Swarovski Crystals which produced a very rare piece of accessory for men who wants to be distinct. Mid-range cufflinks were most practical in terms of producing masters and molds although they were not very easy to insert into the cuff.
Materials used in producing cufflinks have remained unchanged with some variation depending on the economic circumstance. If the price of gold increases, gold jewelry, including cufflinks, will reduce sales. This is the same with other materials used like silver although with Rhodium, it's a different story. Rhodium is an exception to the law of supply and demand plus benefits like it does not stain like gold or silver and requires very low maintenance.
Cufflinks can be considered "mirrors of our history" since it's existence spans ages. Each era is different from the other and this variation is enshrined in every cufflinks design from that particular time period. The medieval period saw the production of cufflinks that exhibits medieval art and during the renaissance, the period was entombed with art deco designed cufflinks.
If you plan on buying cufflinks, your design choices are endless. There are those that are made of glass with cat eye designs; cufflinks made from enamel; diamond studded cufflinks and the list goes on. Cufflinks are more than just accessories. They are jewelries that exhibit its designers sensibility and creativity without the limitation of technical specs.
Cufflinks spans ages and history. If you are a man who appreciates his heritage and wants to define elegance, it is the right accessory for you.
Cufflinks reached its zenith during the 1960s and the decade thereafter. It was at this point when cufflinks designers like Swank sells twelve million pairs of cufflinks a year. It was reasonably priced at $2.50 which made it accessible to a lot of people. Cufflinks then became a popular choice for people who want to reward the recipient for a good performance.
