Perhaps one of the most easily recognized socks, the argyle has it roots in the highlands of Scotland around the 14th century. Another classic configuration exists in the houndstooth check. This two-tone pattern is characterized by broken checks or abstract 4-pointed shapes. Similar to the argyle, the houndstooth check is attributed to woven cloths of Scotland. Present often in woolen garments such as sport coats, outerwear and hats, the houndstooth check can be both classic and yet also dramatic and fashion forward. Colorations extend from the traditional black and white to paprika, pumpkin, seafoam and sage. The houndstooth sock provides the wearer with a refined and thoroughly modern hosiery alternative.
Additionally, the tweed pattern is generally defined by a rich, textured weave- often giving the sock a comfortable nubby appearance. While originally produced solely in wool, the finest tweed socks can now be produced in different configurations of precious fibers- such as merino wool and silk, further lending an incredibly soft hand to an already fantastically comfortable sock.
Another prevalent pattern in hosiery is the "neat" configuration. The enjoyment in neat patterns can be found in the pure variety available. Neat refers to a small reoccurring detail or design on a sock. This could be present in small diamonds, rectangles, raindrops or polka dots. Many neat patterns can be quite complex, utilizing different colors on the lengthwise and crosswise yarns to produce subtle but dynamic patterns. Often considered a classic pattern in men's dress hosiery, neats can play quite nicely off a range of beautiful suits or slacks.
