Purple Jacquard Woven
You don't have to be a Renaissance fair enthusiast in order to reap the benefits of choosing a Renaissance style wedding dress. Every bride wants something unique and special, something memorable, to wear on her wedding day. If you decide that you want something other than the traditional, then consider the merits of going back in time, for a gown that fits your own individual tastes and personality.
The Renaissance frock is usually a two-part ensemble, consisting of the overdress (frock), and a chemise underneath. The chemise is a full-length, usually long-sleeved shift, that can be as simple or as elaborate as you desire. The sleeves of the chemise can be plain or ruffled, open, laced with ribbon, or cuffed with elastic.
The frock usually laces to the waistline, and then is open in the front, so the chemise is visible underneath. Most frocks are sleeveless, but you can also have them with attached sleeves, or with detachable lace on sleeves. If you plan your frock with attached sleeves, you might want to consider having a sleeveless chemise. For brides who like to attend the Renaissance faires, and intend to wear their frock when they go, detachable sleeves make a great choice.
Here are only a few examples of the effects you can achieve by using a frock for your wedding gown; the possibilities are really limited only by your imagination.
Let us say you would like a Highland theme for your wedding. You could consider a chemise of crisp, white linen with full belled-shaped sleeves, paired with a frock of Highland plaid. One variation of this, would be to have the skirt of the frock in plaid, and the bodice in a solid color; and then dress your bridesmaids in that color. As for the frock, you might have it made sleeveless or with slashed sleeves to reveal the chemise sleeves underneath. If you choose a solid color bodice, you could have the sleeves match the color of the bodice, or match the plaid of the skirt; and if you intend to wear your frock to the Renaissance faires, why not have both a solid and a plaid pair of detachable sleeves.
For something a little more traditional, consider this option. Choose an ivory or white frock, made from a beautiful brocade, jacquard, or even velvet fabric. Underneath, a chemise in a rich silk or satin. If your chemise color matches that of the frock, you could make the chemise really noticeable by embellishing the hem with ruffles, and the neckline and sleeves with lace.
If you choose a contrasting color for the chemise, consider using the slashed sleeves for the frock. One such ensemble I have seen made an absolutely stunning effect. The bride chose a frock made of white brocade that had a design of small leaves, woven into the fabric. Instead of lacing to the waist, the frock was designed with an Empire-waist like bodice, so more of the chemise was visible in the front. The chemise was made of a delicately patterned gold linen, almost damask-like fabric, and the sleeves, from the elbow down, were made of spills of golden lace. The frock sleeves were slashed, puffed at the shoulders, and ended at the elbow to better display the lace.
For the bride who doesn't care to wear white or ivory, here is an excellent example of a really luxurious wedding frock. This ensemble works especially well for winter weddings, but can be modified for spring and summer, by using lighter colors and fabrics. Have your frock made of velvet, in a deep, lush color, such as purple, dark blue, or dark green; and instead of lacing in the front, use a back lacing bodice. This will leave the frock open in the back. Have your chemise made in either a complementing or contrasting color with a mini-train of ruffles or lace at the back of the skirt. You might want to have your chemise sleeveless, plain cuffed, or with small ruffles or lace at the wrist, because the focus will be on the frock sleeves. These can be attached or detached; made of the same fabric as the frock, puffed at the shoulder, and banded with gold down the length of the arm.
As I said earlier, all you need is your own particular taste and imagination to create a truly unique wedding frock. The frock can be made in the way that suits your figure best; front-lacing, back-lacing, tight bodice, Empire bodice, or loose bodice. You can have your frock and chemise made from a wide range of fabrics and colors. Unless you intend to make it yourself, the next step is to find someone that is experienced in the art of designing and creating wedding frocks.
