Purple Black
The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ranking system awards different colored belts to the practitioners to declare the level of skill and the degree of mastery they have acquired through their training. There is a remarkable difference in the ranking system followed by the junior and senior level. The junior's falling under less than fifteen years of age start with white belt, and then jumps to yellow, orange and green colored belts. The adults (age sixteen and over) have a ranking system starting with white, blue, purple, brown and black belts.

White belt
The lowest ranking belt, the white belt, is provided to the new entrants to the field. The white belt holders are taught the escape and defense mechanisms, before moving to the blue belt.
Blue belt
The blue belt holders concentrate more on the survival techniques, guard passes and submission techniques, and typically take 1-3 years of training to earn the blue belt.
Purple belt
Purple belt practitioners in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu spend over 4-5 years of enthusiastic training and at least two years as a blue belt to achieve this rank. The longer time frame spent by these practitioners make them qualified to instruct lower ranks of the techniques to be employed in this form of martial art.
Brown belt
It demands one to be at least 18 years old and to spend at least 1.5 years in the purple belt ranking to achieve the elite purple rank.
Black Belt
Hours of dedicated training, at least 19 years of age along with one year of brown belt is inevitable to get awarded the black belt. The black belt can obtain up to 9 degrees, with the seventh replacing the black with red and black belt. It is the 9th and tenth degree that converts it to a plain solid red belt.
Red Belt
The red belt, the highest of the ranking, is awarded only to those practitioners who can take this martial art to its glory. It is believed that if one obtains the black belt at the age of 19, then the earliest time when he can be awarded with the red belt is at the age of 67.
