I'm going to tell you a story which will, in a roundabout way, tie motivational business strategies to vocal abilities acquired in a foreign country. It will all make sense in the end, I promise!
I love music. From the time I was a kid, I had fantasies of being a rock star, and playing moving guitar solos on stage. Last year, half of that dream was realized with a band I became a part of whilst traveling in Korea. We Played throughout the city of Seoul, and made enough cash from our live shows to pay for a studio to record our first album.
I was brought into the band by the drummer, who I'd known since high school. After having ousted the previous lead guitar player for badmouthing the bassist, the guys decided to have me come out for a rehearsal. I was nervous as you can imagine, but I must have done something right, because they asked me to join right then and there.
Aside from my lead guitar duties, I was also in charge of all the marketing and advertising for our shows. It was a great outlet for my graphic design and illustrative passions. I also wrote music, and began to take on a larger role as a vocalist.
This is where the intrinsic motivation kicks in, because I didn't start out as a good singer. In fact, hearing myself sing was almost enough to make me quit before I'd even gotten off the ground. The only way I was going to get better, was by committing to a long and painful year of singing scale exercises.
After about a week of singing these scales, my enthusiasm petered off. Negativity sunk in, and my motivation dropped off the charts. I stopped singing for about a week and decided, instead, to feel sorry for myself. It was during this period of feeling sorry for myself that I was coming back from the bar one night, and I had a song playing on my iPod that captured the moment perfectly, so I began to sing. And it sounded alright! I even noticed a little bit of improvement on my voice from having sung a weeks worth of scales! Pumped, I sang through a full vocal workout that night, much to the discomfort of my neighbours, I'm sure.
My epiphany is as follows: You need to take on the dull, challenging tasks when you are riding high. You need to be in the right mood for it. But how do you get into the right mood? For me, it starts from the heart. You have to rely on your emotions to tell you when the moment is right to undertake whatever exercise, or business project, or marketing proposal, or vocal scale you are about to attempt. If you attack your work in a state of inspiration, your results will speak for themselves.
Here are some strategies that I use to get in the Zone.
1. Music. Take a break, kick back, and blast a song you love. Something that rocks, and gets your heart going. Be sure to be in an environment where you can play it loud. Or, achieve that end using headphones. If you don't know where to start, get your hands on some Daft Punk.
2. Caffeine. This is a no-brainer. A natural stimulant, this beautiful drug will help you shake the cob-webs and get ready to rock out hard - at whatever it is that needs rocking out.
3. Heroes. Look at your gods for inspiration. Be like Mike. Look at what the greats are doing in your field, and study their moves. Set up goals for yourself and find ways of improving your own game.
4. Scoring. Put the puck in the net. Set up a few small projects that you know you can finish in a day, and will be valuable immediately. Keep them small, and execute. This builds momentum and makes the bigger projects seem more manageable.
5. Pseudo-Streak. This one is guaranteed to get you fired up and ready to destroy! Do something completely unrelated to get your mind off your work, whilst simultaneously getting the juices flowing. Preferably something you've never done before. Example: Wait for a rainy day. I mean, a REALLY rainy day. Next, strip down to your underwear and sprint laps around your block. Remember how fun this was as a kid? Scream something along the lines of, "I AM THE GOD OF LIGHTNING!" It will make your neighbours laugh, or fear your, or call the police. There's nothing illegal about it, providing you manage to keep your underwear on and steer clear of schools and playgrounds.
