Orange Set Tie
I purchased a set of Debbie Meyers Green Bags a couple of weeks ago and am not sure if they are...?
...worth the money or not.
I put some strawberries in one of the bags but did not refrigerate. I twisted the end of the bag and tucked it under the berries. Two days later they had "full fuzz" on them. I also noticed that the bag was slightly opened. Is this the reason the berries ruined or did I need to refrigerate. Our home stays pretty cool, too cool according to my husband, and I thought they would be okay. I also put couple of oranges in a bag and few days later they were starting to get patched of black on them. I was sure that they were sealed up but did not put them in refrigerator. I don't think this would have happened without bag. Instructions stated not to use bag ties due to damaging bags. Has anyone had any experiences with these bags? I buy lots of fresh fruit and vegetables in summer and thought these would help cut down on waste.
I bought a set of these, also, and really love them! I haven't used them for strawberries--I had some last week, too, that went bad before we ate them, and totally forgot about using the bags! What I've seen great success with them is with lettuce and other salad items. They have definitely paid for themselves by prolonging the life of vegetables for us. But I don't think I've tried them with any fruit, as we usually eat it up pretty quickly.
I'm wondering if your strawberries went bad so quickly due to moisture? I think it's pretty important to make sure everything is VERY dry that's in the bag--the moisture causes the mold and rot. And strawberries are full of water, so maybe that's what the problem was.
All I can say is play around with them and experiment with different items to see how they work best. Perhaps some things do better than others.
