how do you compare the common games in nfl tie breaking for wild card?
first of all nfl.com says minimum of four games or go to next step: strength of victory
whats strength of victory?
for example the jets and ravens lets say they end up tying in record and conference record.
then they go to common games. the ravens played the patriots and lost but the Jets played them twice and won and lost. which one counts? they share two games after that. is the first game counted as one or two games? it matters cuz that decides if its 3 or 4. remember its a minimum of four. and whats strength of victory?
PLZ help
thanx
The way the NFL is set up, two teams from the same conference will play at least 5 common games. For the Jets and Ravens, their common opponents would be New England, Indianapolis, Oakland, and Cincinnati. The Jets played the Patriots twice, and the Ravens played Cincinnati twice.
Both teams have or will play the other three teams. The Jets, currently, have only played three of these games. (New England, Oakland, and New England again) giving them a 2-1 record. Baltimore has played four games (New England, Cincinnati, Cincinnati again, and Indianapolis) given them an 0-4 record. So here is what we have so far:
Jets: 2-1 (still needs to play Indianapolis, and Cincinnati)
Ravens: 0-4 (still needs to play Oakland)
So, the Jets would win the tiebreaker against the Ravens, as the Ravens can only finish 1-4 at best. And the Jets can only finish 2-3 at worse. So, as long as the two teams finish with the same record and conference record, the Jets would win the tiebreaker.
Strength of victory is the combined record of all the teams one team has beaten during the year. So, as example, the Jets record would currently be 41-58. This is because they have beaten Houston (7-7), New England (9-5), Tennessee (7-8), Oakland (5-9), Carolina (6-8), Buffalo (5-9), and Tampa Bay (2-12). If you add up all their records,
[ (7-7)+(9-5)+(7-8)+(5-9)+ (6-8)+(5-9)+(2-12) ]
you get 41-58.
