So you love mid century ties but you have trouble wearing them since they are shorter than today's counterparts. Well, I have to agree that it seems that manufactures didn't think too much about big and tall men back then, whose ties are at least 60 inches long by today's standards. A lot of skinny vintage ties from the 1950's and 1960's range from 50 to 57 inches tops. When you think about it, teenage boys neckwear is in the area of 48 to 50 inches long. It is interesting to note that in the 50's and 60's men wore their pants higher than they do today, and that practice helped bridge the gap between the end of the tie and the belt line
So what to do? Here are some suggestions as to how to solve the problem associated with men's short neckties:
Adjust the Knotting Process
You can make an adjustment when you tie your neckwear. Simply start with a shorter piece of the thin end when you begin the knotting process. The result will be longer tie but a shorter thin end which rests higher than usual behind the front of the necktie, but because it is hidden by the front, it isn't a factor. The thin end could end up resting as close as two inches from the knot itself.
Have Your Neckwear Professionally Lengthened
One option is to take your favorite tie to a seamstress or tailor and have the neckwear lengthened. The first thing you need to do is to figure out how long you want it to be. Check out the length of the other neckties in your wardrobe. Then put on a dress shirt and choose any neckwear you regularly wear and put it on. Mark off the area which is hidden under the collar and take off the tie and take measurements. The short necktie will be cut in an inconspicuous area that will be hidden under the collar and a pre-measured amount of fabric will be added. Leave the sewing to the professionals as it can be tricky working with an accessory which contains an inner lining.
Wear Your Neckwear behind a Three Piece Suit
One of the easiest ways to mask a short tie is to hide it behind the vest of a three piece suit. Enough of it will show and no one will be the wiser. If you are more comfortable wearing a two piece ensemble, you will need to keep the jacket buttoned, which is sometimes easier said than done.
