Men Tie Silk
It has happened to all of us. We take off our necktie after a long day at work and set it down. What we don't realize - until it is too late - is that we have accidentally sat right on top of the tie, adding a solid crease that seems like it will never come out. Is the tie ruined for good?
Obviously, it is easier to be careful and avoid wrinkling a tie in the first place. But, fortunately, there are things you can do to restore your neck tie to its previous condition.
First, try hanging the tie for several hours. Most times just the pull of gravity will remove any short-term wrinkles and return your necktie to like-new condition. After wearing a tie, it is also a good idea to hang it for a time in order to help straighten the fabric's fibers before storing the tie. In order to allow the necktie to "recover," it is also prudent to wear a different necktie each day of the week. Never wear the same tie two days in a row or you risk creating wrinkles that will be especially difficult to remove.
If simply hanging a necktie is not enough to remove any visible wrinkles, a second option is to try rolling the tie firmly within a long piece of fabric, such as a bath towel. Stretching the tie like this for a couple of days will hopefully bring back the tie's original shape. After unrolling the tie, it should be hung for a while to replace the desired straightness before storing.
Depending on the fabric, you may be able to carefully iron the tie to remove wrinkles. Be very cautious to use the proper heat setting on the iron; too much heat will certainly burn the fabric. A clothing steamer - or even a teapot - can be used to steam out the wrinkles as the tie is hung, but caution should be used here, too. Never iron and steam the tie at the same time.
All silk neckties, and most other fabrics as well, should be sent to the dry cleaners for cleaning. Washing a tie in the laundry will not only inadvertently create wrinkles, it may totally ruin the tie's shape and permanently damage the colors, too.
Properly storing your ties is vital to ensuring they remain wrinkle-free and look like new for as long as possible. Most men assume that hanging a tie is the correct way to store it between uses, but actually, hanging a silk tie in the closet between other items of clothing can stretch the fabric over time. This will distort its shape or create "waves" in the body of the tie. The best way to store a tie is to loosely roll it - from the narrow end to the wide end - and lay it on its side in a separate drawer with other ties. Any type of pressure or crowding has the potential to warp or wrinkle the tie.
Just the act of tying a neck tie severely twists the area around the knot. A tie should not be tied too tightly; the final knot should hold its shape, but also be loose enough to slip back and forth. When removing a tie, you should carefully loosen and undo the knot. Some men like to grab the top of the knot and pull hard until the tie unwraps from around the neck, but this extreme pressure is guaranteed to bend the silk fibers, deforming the tie for future use.
If you remember that your silk neckties are pretty fragile and need to be cared for, your favorite ties should last for years and years, and look as good as the day you bought them.
A necktie is one of the few fashion accessories reserved primarily for men. They also come in many varied designs and in every color under the sun. Whether you want to display which school you attended with a college necktie, want to support your favorite team with a sports necktie, or simply want to present a professional image, a quality silk tie is the perfect choice to wear.
