YOUNG ATTORNEYS
This article explains why young attorneys need to dress for success at work. The advice pertains to colleagues, fabrics, and shoes.
ATTORNEY COLLEAGUES
Young attorneys often heave a sigh of relief when they begin work at a law office and notice that senior colleagues dress casually. Then they start dressing the same way. Here's a serious fashion blunder. You should not dress the way your colleagues do, especially if they're slacking off. Instead, dress up, that is, wear an outfit that's a notch better than the people around you.
Although he's not an attorney, Tom Wolfe illustrates how this theory works. He always dressed better than those around him when he worked in the newsroom of the New York Herald Tribune as a reporter. Before long he was writing nonfiction bestsellers, leaving his colleagues in the dust.
Naturally, you don't have to dress in white suits like Wolfe to stand out from the crowd. Just keep in mind the concept of dressing better than those around you.
FABRICS FOR ATTORNEYS
Your shirt or blouse can be a blend of cotton and polyester. You can also use a 100 percent cotton shirt, although it will wrinkle more easily. Your suits should be 100 wool in the fall, spring, and winter. They can be cotton in summer. The best cotton is lightweight Belgian linen.
Male and female attorneys should avoid black leather jackets. Male attorneys should also avoid cotton ties. (A man's tie should be 100 percent silk.) In general, avoid any fabric that has a cheap look, an iridescent luster, or a filmy appearance, especially in trousers and jackets.
SHOES FOR ATTORNEYS
Many young attorneys wear the wrong kind of shoes. A good number of young attorneys can also be seen during the day with untied shoelaces. Always double tie them, like an athlete.
As to the correct style of footwear, male attorneys should wear conservative black or brown shoes. The shoes should always be polished. Female attorneys should avoid the temptation to wear light-colored shoes even if wearing a light-colored suit. Instead, match dark shoes with these light outfits for a more professional look.
If you follow this advice, clients, colleagues, and judges will respond better to you, and so will everyone else!
