Does the AMC "Mad Men" TV show illustrate why modern people are so unhealthy looking?
Created by a Sopranos writer, we've fallen in love with AMC's "Mad Men" program about a 1960's NYC advertising agency. What we love the most about it is that it reminds us of a not-too-distant time when people were much more slender, much more healthier, and much more FREE.
Everyone smoked. CONSTANTLY! And they drank. A lot. And drinking and driving? Of course! Kid won't get to sleep? Give him a dab of whiskey, shuts him right up!
Men were clean cut and gorgeously handsome. Suits and ties and even a little Brill creme in the hair to give it a sparkle.
Women were shapely, sexy and buxom, they didn't try to look like boys. Pointy bras and tight girdles, high heels and stockings. Pampered hair.
I'm sorry, but that generation was hands down 100 times more classy and sophisticated than ours today.
We gave up the freedoms of smoking and drinking and stopped getting dressed up and pampered... and we're mostly a generation of FAT, slovenly, classless, slobs.
I agree with some of what you say - the 50's was a dressier time, but I dont agree that giving up excessive drinking and smoking makes us classless today - on the contrary, I think over indulging in alcohol or cigarettes is classless considering the health and safety risks.
There is no reason why you cant wear high heels and a skirt and a pointy bra if you wish, but things change - and you cant expect the rest of us to adhere to outdated standards.
Relative to general health: Damaging fast and over-processed foods were not available in the 50's. They didnt have to worry so much about transfats and such then. Its no wonder they stayed 'buxom" and not obese.
