The fashion industry will have you to believe that skinny ties are the latest trend. After all, part of their motivation is to market clothing and accessories to the next generation. Of course, designers pull their inspiration from the past and combine them with their own ideas about where fashion is headed or where they would like to see it headed. You may notice that trends are often cyclical. The return of the narrow necktie to the forefront of fashion is one of those trends, having been popularized in the 50's and 60's. Thin neckwear reappeared in the 80's and they are here again, worn by musicians, the hippest celebrities, and now, the general public. What is it with the love affair with skinny ties?
They Are the Epitome of Cool
Think of the Ratpack back in the 50's: Dean Martin, Joey Bishop and Frank Sinatra in well tailored suits sporting skinny neckties. Fast forward to the TV hit show "Mad Men". Nostalgia brings us back to a time and place when men dressed better: the clean, elegant and sophisticated look achieved with a well tailored suit, often an equally well made white shirt, and a slender tie. Everything coordinated: tapered suits, slimmer lapels and ties to match.
A lot has happened since in the world of fashion, allowing for the person of today to mix and match narrow neckwear with long and short sleeves, with or without jackets, and even with vests and rolled up sleeves, as seen worn by Justin Timberlake. People have gone in all sorts of directions, even using them as belts.
Women think skinny ties are cool, too. They love the look as worn by their guy, and even wear them themselves. It works out very well, since women generally have smaller frames, and slimmer neckwear looks awfully good on them. It is amazing to think that a few inches shaved from a necktie can make a difference, but it does. Every generation reinvents the use of these odd shaped accessories, but the fact that people insist on owning at least a few as part of their wardrobe to do with what they please is a testament to their staying power.
People Look Good Wearing Them
A lot of people, both men and women, look damn good in skinny ties. It's as simple as that. They tie one on, look in the mirror, and notice that it improves the final look they want to achieve. Of course it helps that they are in style today. Sometimes it is a good thing to be nudged by the fashion industry into trying new things, and the young crowd is doing just that with thin neckties. There are already plenty of people who love narrow neckwear, and they constantly add to their collection with new and vintage finds. The vintage ones are especially sweet because they are essentially picking up a unique accessory to combine it with the basic essentials for a totally one-of-a-kind look. Young people are finding out what their older counterparts have already known for some time, that slender ties enhances their physical attributes in a major way.
Conclusion
Sometimes we don't know why we like something, just that we do. When it comes to skinny neckties, combining the cool factor with something which makes us feel great makes for a winning combination, something that transcends any passing trend. A style classic all its own.
