Made Neck

what are "knots" in your back and neck made out of?
i have had these painful knots for years and when i get a massage they tell me i have a lot of knots. i have been told if i continue to have a massage therapist work on them by applying a lot of pressure they will go away. but the only difference i notice is they just break them up to smaller knots and spread them around between by shoulder blades. does anyone else have this painful problem? what are they made of? and is there a better way to get rid of them?
The "knots" in your back are due to inflammation of the fascia - which is a connective tissue in the body that surrounds muscles, and other things as well. The massage therapist you saw probably tried a technique called myofacial release to losen them up. At first it does simply break down the "knots" (also known as trigger points) into smaller ones - but over time if you keep at it the knots can be worked out completely. The pressure applied by the massage therapist helps to reduce inflamation (although it may hurt A LOT at first) and work out any toxins (like lactic acid) that could be built up in the area. If you have really bad knots - it could take several sessions to work this out completely.
If you've had this problem for years look into something called Chronic Myofacial Pain Syndrome - that is when you have a bunch of trigger points and are in pain constantly. Unfortunately there isn't a cure for this type of thing. Massage is probably the best remedy there is - but it's pricey. If you can swing it - try going once a month or so. A good home remedy is to put a ball (like a tennis ball) in a sock (for some cushioning) and put it between where your back is hurting and a wall. You can then roll the ball around on your painful spots and apply the right amount of pressure. That can help work the knots out.
Stretching and physical activity is also very important. Try to get enough exercise and begin every day by stretching out your muscles - it feels good and helps get you going
also, warm baths with epsom salts can help to loosen the knots as well. You can also try alternating ice and heat as you would with a sprain or other injury.
If you talk to your doctor he/she could prescribe muscle relaxants - but those do not work well long term. For short term pain relief - try an anti-inflammatory or even just tylenol. Just don't go overboard - the best way to deal with this is through exercise and conditioning your body to not knot up like that - it takes work and isn 't easy - but it's the only long term relief there is so far.
