You bet it is, but don't just take my word for it. Ferrets come in different colors and it is good to know their differences especially if you are deciding to be an owner of a ferret. There are different types of ferret color which we will be discussing here in detail. This will give you an idea on what kind of ferret is the right one for you. And also, you might take into consideration looking into their eyes, nose, undercoat, tails and the different patterns that they have to help you distinguish one ferret from another.
Let's start out with the basic colors that ferrets have.
The first on our list would be the Albino, this color is very common in animals such as a horse, and basically, an Albino is classified to be one that lacks the properties of having pigments of color. So what this means is that their color is mainly white. An Albino ferret would have white fur, light pink to ruby eyes; guardhairs would be white to cream, having a pink nose, an undercoat of white to cream color, and having white to cream colored mitts (feet).
Ferrets also have a Black colored group and contrary to the Albino, most of the color you will notice with this type is black, but still, it's not as pure as an Albino is. The fur color would definitely be black, the undercoat would be white to cream, the eyes would be black or almost black, the guardhairs are also black, they have a black nose or almost black nose, and finally, they have black mitts.
One of my favorite colors in ferrets is Chocolate, as the name sounds delicious, and if you like chocolates, I would suggest getting this type ferret, just don't ever try to eat them. They have a dark brown fur, with a white or golden cast undercoat, a warm milk chocolate brown guardhairs, having eyes of dark brown, almost black or burgundy, and for the nose, it could come different combinations such as pink, brown or beige; with some having a 'T' outline of a different color, or even a brick colored nose; and their mitts would be either brown, dark brown or black.
An uncommon color would be the Cinnamon, if you are someone who likes red or shades of red; I suggest you get this one. A cinnamon colored ferret has a light shade of reddish brown fur and guardhairs, having an undercoat color of a golden cast or even white, eyes are light to medium burgundy, and like the Chocolate, this type of ferret has different nose colors and patterns: pink, dark beige, brick colored, or a pink or beige with a brick or brown 'T' outline, and mitts of reddish brown or brown.
And the last color that we'll be discussing here is the Dark-Eyed White or DEW in short, focuses on having burgundy eyes, the fur, guardhairs, undercoat and mitts color would be white to cream, a pink nose, and the tail might even have colored spots.
I would like to warn you that the DEW ferret is prone to deafness as they have inherited the Waardenburg Syndrome. This defect should be taken into examinations and observations, try to see if your pet is deaf by making observations. You could use a squeaking toy at the back of his head or using a rattle on top of his head or just make a loud crashing sound of cans outside the house to see if he reacts to it. Once you find out if your ferret is deaf, then you would be able to train him differently from a normal ferret, and even give more caring and affection.
Choosing the right type of ferret is important information for new ferret owners who are going to have their first ferret, to help them realize that there are a lot to choose from. And selecting the right one on the first time really does have its benefits.
