Knitted Necktie
Job interviews are one in a series of steps you take when applying for a job. Usually the first step involves sending a cover letter along with a résumé and a filled out application form. Often the resume is an acceptable place for you to list some of your interests, usually at the very bottom. This is because your education and experience will make up the bulk of the most important information for the job you are interviewing for. Listing you interests is nice but optional. It rounds you out as a person and who knows, you might just connect with your potential employer if they share a similar hobby. How you dress is very important when you are chosen for an interview, including the tie you wear. While novelty neckties provide similar insight to your personal interests, you will see that your outfit should be free of such neckwear for this all important first meeting.
Novelty Ties are Often Meant to be Funny, Interviews are Not
To understand why a novelty accessory is not an appropriate choice, it is good to know what a novelty item is. According to Dictionary.com, as a noun, the word "novelty" is "an article...whose value is chiefly decorative, comic or the like and whose appeal is often transitory." Think of cartoon themed novelty ties. Large depictions of Taz or Bugs Bunny of the Looney Tunes gang and even small allover designs of the same characters have comic appeal. Christmas themes are definitely transitory. Depictions of cigars, chickens, coca cola, your favorite sports team and others themes can be interpreted as fun, funky and funny.
Now think about the interview process. It is very serious business. In all earnestness you are there to try to secure a job for yourself. You want to appear as if you are taking it seriously and you want to reflect the professional side of yourself. Since over 50% of another person's perception of you is based on how you look, wearing the wrong necktie would certainly send the wrong message. You are not applying for a Mickey Mouse job, so don't bring him with you to the interview room.
Share Your Qualifications, Not Your Interests
Wearing novelty neckwear is one way for you to share your interests with the rest of the world. When it comes to getting a job, a list of your likes on your resume is perfectly acceptable. Once you meet the person conducting your interview and case their office for their interests, you may be able to strike up a brief conversation about things you both happen to like. All this talk is a way to connect with the person making a decision about your future, which is fine, but when it comes to the nitty gritty, the person on the other side of the desk wants to see you at your best. When it comes to clothing, the outfit you wear is giving him or her a glimpse, a preview of what they can expect from you if you are chosen for the job. While they might be happy to know that you are a well rounded person with interests outside of work, they are hiring you for that portion of the day you will be spending at work. In addition to your selling yourself on your credentials, your attire is an important piece of the equation. Unless you are interviewing for a job at Disney World, keep the amusing ties out of the picture.
Conclusion
If the tie you are thinking of wearing makes you laugh, if it is amusing enough to even put a smile on your face, opt out of wearing it to an interview. It will fail to reflect the serious side of you and will create the wrong impression. Why hurt your chances of landing a job?
