Goat tying is a timed event where the contestant runs her horse to a staked out goat at the other end of the arena. After dismounting on a run, the goat is flipped and three of its four legs are tied together. The time ends after the contestant throws their hands in the air. Like in calf roping, the goat has to stay tied for 6 seconds. If the goat gets up in that time, the contestant is disqualified. The person with the fastest time wins the event.
The tie in goat tying takes a great deal of practice. Fast ties require smooth, fluid movements. It is best to keep your head down as you tie to focus on wrapping the bones of the leg. A lot of new goat tying competitors often develop the bad habit of moving their whole body as they tie. This takes up more time than you would realize. Focus your body movements to just your arms and hands. The less the rest of you moves, the faster you will tie. Be sure to tie your knot around the bottom of you legs. Knots tied higher can loosen as the goat strains.
