It may just be a reflection of the times we are living in today, but like it or not classic, tailored suits, neat ties and muted palettes are here to stay. With many designers seeking to push boundaries and revolutionize the world of men's fashion, it's clear that during times of recession, traditional straight lines and conservative designs make a statement of their own. Men's fashion collections have always embraced a cool and timeless conservatism with a focus on essential basic investment garments rather than flamboyant and extravagant pieces. Recession fashion has seen a switch from excessiveness to practicality and it has seen designers such as Prada, Giorgio Armani and Ralph Lauren present basic and functional elements in their designs in their Fall 2009 collections. Some fashion designers such as Costume National have displayed loose fitting, layered and comfort garments in hues of gray and yellow. Jeans designers such as Tom Ford and Diesel have begun to introduce recession jeans and cut back prices.
With men looking for more consistency in their wardrobes, essential investment pieces for every stylish man's wardrobe include fine quality tailored suits accompanied with simple yet stylish cufflinks and ties.
Interestingly, it seems that a specific men's accessory, the tie, is an indicator of more constrained times. Although the fashion industry has slowed, trends show that the narrow tie is back in favor with the male fashionista. Much like in the 1930s men's ties that are less than an inch wide are flying out of fashion stores. Retail sources have confirmed that tie sales have dramatically increased as news of recession spread with more men hoping to retain current employment by smartening up.
Acquire plain colored crisp shirts, plain knitwear and woolen, double or single breasted tweed peacoats or a trench coat. Avoid any kind of block patterns on shirts and stick to monochrome palettes. Invest in some good quality cardigans; dark grays are the best colors to go for and suit most skin tones. If you have any pieces that you feel good in and it doesn't quite fit, better find a good quality tailor to adjust and redefine your clothing. Purchase a pair of dark colored, smart lace up shoes. These items are classic in their design and practical for almost any outfit. A good pair of brogue, derby or oxford shoes will serve you well. These shoes will add the perfect polish to your outfit and are a timeless design.
