When it comes to ice fishing, anglers don't always put safety equipment at the forefront of their checklist, nor do they have safety measures in place should something happen.
Having a contingency plan in place for the worse possible scenarios gives you a fighting chance when push comes to shove and your life is on the line.
The best way to be prepared is to first, be wise enough to not put yourself in a situation by understanding ice conditions and forecasted temperatures, and secondly having the safety equipment ready and operational to get yourself out of a jam. These are called precautionary measures and should not be overlooked.
Rope
A nylon or polypropylene rope works the best, rather than a cotton type of rope because it doesn't freeze when wet. Bring at least 25-30ft. of extra rope with you. It can come in handy for many tasks, in example you could use extra rope to further secure your ice fishing shelter down to the ice when winds intensify and normal shelter anchors need some help.
Rope can also be used to tie down equipment to a sled or be used as a towline when pulled by an ATV or snowmobile. Most of all, rope can be used as a lifeline should anyone fall through the ice. Make rope standard equipment on your sled or in your fishing bucket, and make sure it is easily accessible.
Ice escape spikes
Ice spikes are a must have and is an essential piece of life saving equipment when it comes to ice fishing, because it allows you to claw your way back on to the ice should you fall in. Ice spikes are a pair of spikes with handles that are corded together and designed to wear around your neck.
These escape spikes are especially critical to have if you do a lot of ice fishing alone. Think about it, having these escape spikes on your person is a cheap insurance policy when there's no body else to help pull you out. They cost about $5-$6 so there's no excuse to not have a set.
PFD (Personal flotation device)
Many ice anglers may be amused to see one wearing a PFD on the ice and may see this as over-kill. But to some that do wear one, the laugh is from who's standing last. Now to many people the word "person flotation device" represents a big bulky orange life jacket. Not the case any more. Today's options are geared toward ergonomics and fisherman and are made to look good and be comfortable. Manufacturers have designed the PFD to be manually inflatable and some are made to be fresh-water activated. These flotation devices are designed to wear like suspenders and belt packs. They can be adjusted to fit outside of winter clothing. This type of PFD can be purchased for as little as $80.00. What's your life worth?
Another flotation device that can be utilized two fold is the throwable device type of PFD, such as a buoyant throw cushion. Because it has handles, a rope can be tied to the throwable device, making it ideal for rescue if someone falls in.
This PFD is also great for additional comfort and can be used as a cushion on top of your camp chair or ice bucket, always knowing it's there should you need it when you hear that cry for help.
Ice Cleats
"Don't need any stink-in ice cleats?" Think again. Many of you sure footed ice anglers who don't mind paying for a Doctors bill because of a head injury, broken elbow or twisted knee, go ahead and take the risk.
All of us experienced ice anglers know that when the wind blows a drift of powered snow on the ice, it's extremely slippery and having ice cleats under your boots is vital. A pair of ice cleats can be purchased for as little as $5.00-$10.00- what would the cost of your medical bill be?
When it comes to ice fishing safety, precautionary measures in place are nothing more than being prepared to counter the given unexpected scenarios and a little common sense!
