If you've lived in a temperate clime for long enough, you'll have a mile-long list of reasons why you hate winter. The temperature and the dry air is brutal on the skin, the weather makes it hard to walk or drive and the elements are particularly cruel to all forms of leather plying the streets. If you want to make your leathers last for at least a couple more winters, here are some tips to help save your favorite Ferragamo wingtips.
Prepare, Prepare, Prepare
Half the battle, many people say, is preparing to attack. That holds especially true in the fight between your beloved leather shoes and the full winter onslaught of Mother Nature. Preparing and treating shoes beforehand might seem like an unnecessary, even frivolous step. But when you consider the conditions that your shoes will have to withstand, you'll probably want to do these for all your shoes.
Apply shoe polish and leather conditioner on your shoes at least once before you step out into the cold. This first application will act as the leather's primary layer of defense against the salt, wet, grime and cold. And because the chemicals come into direct contact with the leather for that application, they're the ones that bind to the leather the best.
Do this at least a day before you intend to go out with your leather shoes. Give allowances for preliminary cleaning and drying of the chemicals. Everything you need - brushes, polish and conditioner - shouldn't cost more than $30, so there's no reason for you not to pick up a set if you don't already have one. Leather shoe retailers like Aldo and Naturalizer often carry their own brand of protectors, so you can start looking there.
Time is of the Essence
When you step out into the winter, it's very likely that soil, snow and slush will immediately find their way to your leather shoes. Once you find yourself indoors again, be sure to brush off all the verdigris from your shoes immediately. The longer that stuff stays on the surface of the leather, the more damage it can do to your shoes.
It's also for this reason that you should wipe off salt lines as soon as they form on your shoes. Salt, in particular, is one of the most destructive agents that your shoes are exposed to during wintertime. Minimizing the salt that makes direct contact with the leather surface will help extend the lifetime of your shoes.
Have a brush and shoe rags at your home's entrance or inside your traveling bag to get the dirt off your shoes. Specialists recommend that you have multiple brushes and rags, never using the brush or rag for one color of shoe on another color. Place your cleaning items somewhere immediately accessible so that you can just grab it and clean up quickly.
A Smelly Season
Sweaty or smelly feet are already a big problem in regular conditions, and they're an even bigger one when you factor in all the extra moisture that winter brings. If you have problems with sweaty or smelly feet, expect them to be exacerbated by the winter season.
If you can afford it, buy antibacterial or antimicrobial socks that help prevent the growth of the pathogens that cause the offending smell. Regular cotton socks are okay, as long as you apply talcum powder or deodorizing foot sprays before putting them on. Those sprays have chemicals that retard sweating, like antiperspirant for your feet.
Winter is one of those inevitable things that you just have to deal with and get through - hopefully with your best leather shoes intact. The key to getting your prized pairs through winter is preparation. You know when it's going to arrive, so there's no reason why you won't be able to prepare weeks or months beforehand.
