Colored Bow Hanky
Let's all bow our heads for a moment of reverent silence. Ladies, you may dab your eyes with a hanky, men kindly remove your chapeaus. We are here to mourn the death of the Feminist Movement in America that succumbed when Hilary Clinton lost the last two primary elections, Montana and South Dakota. Feminism is dead...
...or is it?
I thought I just witnessed a woman make a highly successful run for the office of President of the United States. Did I imagine that? Hilary Clinton just soared to a height in history no woman in this country has ever ascended to before! Didn't Ms. Clinton just complete the entire primary election season in every state and territory in the United States? Didn't voters turn out in vast numbers to support her, to vote for her? Didn't her opponents have to fight tooth and nail to keep up with her and how many of them fell to her insurmountable and overwhelming popularity? Didn't the press take her seriously as a real candidate? Why, the amount of unkind undeserved and mean-spirited press lavished upon her stands as testimony to her credibility as a candidate? Only candidates of the highest order are ruthlessly savaged by the press the way Ms. Clinton was!
Decry the death of Feminism if you will, but history will reflect that Feminism actually took a huge leap forward in America this election season lead by Hilary Clinton, a winner of extraordinary measure! She has single-handedly opened new territory into which women are now able to go, territory into which they now have a responsibility to go, territory into which Ms. Clinton herself may very well venture again.
While some, to wit Gloria Steinem, argue that Senator Clinton suffered a disadvantage due to gender, the same argument could be made for Senator Obama; Ms. Clinton's disadvantage was her gender, his was race. We could be lamenting the death of racial equality if Senator Clinton had emerged victorious over Senator Obama. In truth both candidates emerged victorious just by having completed the primary season. The cry of foul play and the claim of sexism as ballyhooed by some of America's leading feminists rings of nothing more than sour grapes. Did these people think the candidacy for president would simply be handed over to Senator Clinton because she's a woman? How absurd!
But the real winner is America. The voters in America proved that barriers to equality are being torn down, that we have the ability to recognize talent, strength, intelligence and leadership in anyone regardless of age, gender or race! The days of fat, old white men running our country exclusively are gone - and none too soon!
Sure there are those dinosaurs who cannot abide the notion of a woman or a person of color as President of the United States. We will always have a few of them around, but if any group suffered a setback as a result of the primary season, it is the racist and anti-feminist extremists whose power was not enough to overcome the landslide of support for a woman and a black man. It is the racist and the anti-feminist who sustained a huge setback in their agenda.
Finally, there are those who say the Democratic Party needs to heal, to come together, but I ask 'heal' from what, success? America has already won a huge victory in the choice of the woman Hilary Clinton and the black man, Barack Obama as two candidates for the highest office in the land. Congratulations America, you've come a long way, baby - or - bro!
As for the demise of Feminism in America, I cannot help borrowing from Mark Twain: the report of its death is highly exaggerated.
