Basses come in varying types including the striped bass, the large mouth bass, the small mouth bass, and the spotted bass. As you can imagine, catching each type of fish requires a different approach. Getting to know more about each fish will increase the chances of you catching one. The striped bass is from the Percicthyidae family. Other types of bass in the family are the white bass and the white perch. Striped and white bass are sometimes called the temperate basses. This romantic name connotes moderation and self control. As such, fishing for a striped bass can sometimes be quite different than fishing for regular bass.
The large mouth bass, small mouth bass, and spotted bass all belong to the Centrarchidae family, a family that's also associated with bluegills, pumpkinseed and rock bass. If you see a greenish brown bass with vertical stripes on the side you have a small mouth bass. Another was to distinguish between a large mouth and small mouth bass is in the mouth. If the fish's jawbone goes out past its eyes then it's a large mouth. If the jawbone stops before its reddish eye it's a smallmouth. Weight is also an effective way to tell the two fish apart. A small mouth bass averages seven and a half pounds. If you're looking for a small mouth bass, try fishing near rocky streams. Once you have one ready for dinner, expect it to taste similar to a large mouth bass.

Bass fishing clubs have been created by anglers to broaden the friendship between sportsmen. These clubs can be found across the United States. They are divided into the western, central, and eastern divisions. These clubs range from competitive to recreational. A member of one of these clubs receives newsletters and sometimes periodicals providing information about events, contests, and tournaments. If you want to get involved in tournament fishing these clubs can help you enter national tournaments. You can find web pages for many of these clubs that offer information on dues, locations, and past events.
