Boss Mens Wedding
The guest list can be a really tricky part of planning a wedding. You might not think you know that many people, until you sit down and make a list of your friends, your family, your family's friends, and all the spouses and children that are part of the package. Before long, the guest list can become unmanageably large, and cuts have to be made. Knowing whom to invite and which people you can leave off the list can be difficult to sort out. Let this guide help you determine who you must really invite to your wedding.
Family. Yup, you have to invite your family, even if your sister is jealous, your mom is controlling, and your fiance's dad is an embarrassment on the dance floor. They may not be perfect, but they are your clan, so invite them to your wedding. Sometimes couples will set a cut off point to help get the guest list under control. For instance, you might decide to invite first cousins, but not second cousins. As for your father's great aunt you have never met, that is a judgment call, but if your wedding is small, it is probably safe to leave her off the list.
Friends. This can get very tricky, because it is not as easy to define the degree of closeness with friends as it is with relatives. Obviously, the people you hang out with every day will want to get into their fanciest clothes and wedding jewelry to come celebrate your marriage. Then there are your dear old friends who live far away, but hold a special spot in your heart. Invite them too. What about your old college roommate who you still exchange Christmas cards with but have not talked to in seven years? When space is at a premium, that sort of friend does not make the guest list. Ditto for the friend whose wedding you attended four years ago that you have not seen since.
Co-workers. Co-workers can end up being hard to leave off the list because you see them every day. For the bride especially, they probably have heard a fair amount about your wedding, so it can seem rude to leave them out. Ask yourself this question: do you consider any of your co-workers friends outside of the office? If you have one or two that you frequently have cocktails with after work on a Friday evening or a work pal that you brunch with a couple Sundays a month, invite them. People that you never see outside of work are business associates, not friends, and a wedding is a social event, not a business one. It is fine to leave those people off the guest list. A word of advice: if you are not inviting everyone in your office to your wedding, keep the chatter about wedding gowns, jewelry, and flowers to a minimum around the water cooler. As for your boss, invite him or her, along with their spouse. They may not be close personal friends, but it is a smart move to issue an invitation to them nonetheless.
Friends of Family. This is a category of wedding guest that can drive you crazy. These are the people that you hardly know that your parents insist must be invited to your wedding. Maybe your parent have been friends with them since the dawn of time, or attended the weddings of their friends' children and think it would be rude not to reciprocate with an invitation to yours. In general, the larger your wedding, the more of your parents' friends can be invited, and the smaller it is, the more the guest list should be restricted to immediate family and the best friends of the bride and groom. The most fair way to deal with this dilemma is to allot the bride and groom's parents a certain number of spots on the guest list that they can fill any way they see fit. It is not a perfect solution, but at least it is equitable and will help to bring your wedding guest list down to a size that is manageable.
