The first impression you make on a prospective employer at an interview is very important. Amongst other aspects, their judgment will also be based on how you look and present yourself. This makes it essential for a candidate to dress professionally for a job interview, even if the job applied for follows a casual set up.
What's the proper dress code for an interview?
For men dressing up in a traditional navy blue, grey or black suit is ideal. Make sure to combine a suit jacket with pants that match. They can wear a long sleeve shirt (preferably white or light color). The belt must match the shoes. A tie that matches the suit (avoid fancy character ties or the ones with jarring prints on it), dark socks and conservative polished leather shoes completes the outfit. Men should confine themselves from wearing any kind of jewelry, or restrict it to a wedding ring and watch. Be well groomed. Make sure your nails are cut and the hairstyle is neatly combed. Wear a perfume or after shave that does not have very strong notes or permeates the air with an overwhelming aroma. The perfect accessory to carry along is a leather briefcase, which can easily accommodate all your required documents.
Women, in-spite of having a wide range of attire to choose from must also follow the traditional look. A well fitted suit in the shades of black, grey or navy blue is demure and professional. Alternatively a suit skirt can be worn with the same colors accompanied by stockings/leggings. Use standard stockings / leggings. The shirt worn should be well coordinated with the suit. Closed shoes with medium heels are preferable. Micro fiber and synthetic fabrics are suitable for all seasons. Avoid rayon blends. Accessorize to enhance the look with a good watch, a light chain around the neck, scarf etc. Wear make up to give a natural look. Make sure you are well groomed. The nails should be manicured and hair must be neatly styled and tied back in a bun. A mild perfume is suggested. Lastly carry a women's briefcase that can contain all the important credentials.
Make sure you turn your phone on silent when in the interview room. It is impolite to do otherwise. Do not chew gum during the interview. Maintain a good posture which reflects your confidence.
Keeping up with the latest fashion trends for men and women is an important criterion. For example shoulder pads, bell bottoms, high waist trousers are completely out of fashion. Neckties are either slim or wide. Keep a stock of slim and wide neckties and use the style that comes into fashion. Make sure you wear an outfit that not only looks professional but also suits your personality. Ensure your clothes for the interview are well ironed and dry cleaned, with no loosely dangling threads.
