im doing a science project on how fast different types of cloth burn. the types of cloth im going to use are cotton, nylon, polyester, and silk. where can you buy plain white pieces of these cloth near the LA area? [they should be 100% cotton, nylon, polyester, and silk; they shouldnt be a mixture of different fabrics.]

Any decent fabric store should offer those. Toss silk into your mix, too.
The labels on the end of the bolt should tell you the fiber composition of the fabric.
If you can, try to find fabrics marked PFD (prepared for dyeing)... these are fabrics that have no sizing or other fabric treatment added to them.

Some more variables for you to think about:
Does the weave or knit of the fabric influence the rate of burning? (does tightly compacted fabric burn more quickly or more slowly than less compacted fabric?)
Does surface of the fabric make a difference? (Does cotton flannel burn more quickly or more slowly than cotton muslin?)
Do surface treatments help or hinder the spread of fire and rate of burning? (washed vs. unwashed fabrics; washed fabrics vs fabrics with fabric softener; washed, unironed fabrics vs pressed fabrics; washed fabrics vs. starched fabrics vs. scotchguarded fabrics)....
