Cufflinks rarely get dirty, don't they? Especially if you're careful to keep your sleeves clean. The most and only time they're likely to get dirty is when, they're kept for a long time that dirt has already accumulated, or you have accidentally stained them by brushing your sleeves (together with your cufflinks) with food or get spilled off by coffee or any beverage.
Should you bother cleaning cufflinks in the first place?
Yes (except if you're wearing disposable ones).
Because clean cufflinks are not just shimmering and neat to look at, your accessories are also more likely to last longer compared to unmaintained ones. Cleaning your cufflinks whenever they get stained or keeping them clean when tucked in your jewelry box helps avoid rust (for metal cufflinks) or discoloration (for the coated ones), thereby preserving your cufflinks' quality.
Before cleaning them, inspect your cufflinks for any damage or broken pieces. Be extra careful then if you already see one. You don't want to further damage your cufflinks. Better yet, skip your cleaning and repair it first instead.
When cleaning them, particularly when choosing your cleansing agent, always consider your cufflinks' material and finish. Some cufflinks are plain metals, some are plated, some have painted designs, and some have embedded stones (precious and semi-precious stones).
For starters, you can get a good jewelry cleaner from the jewelry store. It doesn't have to be so pricey. You can also go for soap and water instead. Usually they also do the trick and cost way cheaper too.
Precautions
· Never use bleaching agents or harsh cleaning chemicals. These may easily damage your cufflinks, either wear off its coating or color.
· When brushing them clean, use soft-bristled brush to avoid any scratches on your cufflinks' surface.
· Avoid rubbing them with any rough fabric, also to avoid scratches. 100% cotton cloth is best.
2 Ways to clean cufflinks
1. Soak and Brush
Mild soap solution is good enough. To do this, dilute small amounts of your powder or liquid detergent in water and mix thoroughly. In cases that your cufflinks have stains, you can also use vinegar or diluted glass cleaner. They are mild cleansers too, but effective. Use an old and unused soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your cufflinks. Soak your cufflinks first with your cleaning solution for a few minutes in order to soften any stains. That way it's much easier to brush them away.
2. Wipe and Clean
You can also soak a damped (cotton) cloth to your cleansing solution and wipe your cufflinks clean.

Rinse them thoroughly with water. Make sure you don't leave any soap to dry. Avoid leaving cufflinks to air-dry so to avoid rust too. Reaction of wet metal to air/oxygen may be unpleasant. Pat them dry with cotton cloth instead.
After which, you can also polish them, which works best for metal cufflinks (even with stones too). The metal polish not only gives them an extra shine, it also coats them with a layer of protection from dirt and grime.
