The history of colored diamonds
When they think of diamonds, colored diamonds are not usually what comes to mind of the people. The fact is however that beautiful colored diamonds are not unusual, coming in almost every imaginable shades and nuances, and in many cases, are more valuable than "colorless" diamonds.
A lump of coal Gloria?
Diamond – Known by the ancients as adamantine – is what is known as an allotrope of carbon, and in chemical terms, is identical to common forms of carbon and graphite. The difference lies not in the chemical composition, but rather in how molecules are organized.
Diamonds form far deeper beneath the surface of the earth than coal or graphite, coal is subjected to extremely higher pressures (up to 440 tons per inch square) and temperatures (up to 2300 degrees Fahrenheit). This causes the molecules are linked together in a tetrahedral arrangement, which represents both the hardness of diamond and the octagonal form in which they occur.
Shades of difference
Colored diamonds are those in which this provision has molecular been contaminated by a chemical reaction with anything else. A diamond is pure carbon and has no structural flaws would be so perfectly transparent pure water ice. However, as 100% flawless diamonds have been found in nature.
Colored diamonds vary in color from light blue and gray storm and dark amber to black. Pink, purple, red and orange have also been found. The color depends on the nature of the chemical impurity, amber and diamonds brown result of nitrogen, when the internal defects are present, they may be pink or red. A gray color is caused by boron, whereas a diamond Deep Blue may be the result of hydrogen.
Are they more valuable?
Colored diamonds are not necessarily more valuable than light or colorless, although they may be. If a loose diamond collection includes precious stones with a yellowish hue, which may have less value, jewelry retailers often pass for the price of such jewelry. One the other hand, pink and red diamonds are extremely rare and command high prices on the open market when they are available at all.
The classification of colored diamonds
Like their counterparts in clear, colored diamonds have a single classification system that is used by gemologists for analyzing and evaluating such stones. These range from "weak" at one end to the "fantasy" in the middle range, and "dark" fantasy "for those with more intense staining.
Famous examples
The Diamond Hope is a blue diamond that is currently on display at the Smithsonian Institute. One of the most valuable diamonds on Earth (and the inspiration for a series of comedy films with a clumsy French detective) Dar es-I-Nur, a huge pink diamond that is part of the Persian Crown Jewels.
